What type of transmission fluid?
We just purchased a 1998 slk230. I'm a doit-yourselfer. The car is an automatic, what type of tranny fluid do I use? Example " dexronIII, Type F, Etc." If you have any advice to help make the fluid change go smoothly certainly would be appreciated. Da'wiz.

Genuine Mercedes transmission fluid. Go to your dealer, remind the parts guy to give you the "club member" discount. It works!

Yes, you need original Mercedes fluid. It's not like engine oil where Mobil1 is all you need. There is something specific about that fluid - so i need to pay extra to get the proper stuff.

Dont forget to put Loctite on the pan bolts, change the filter and drain the torque converter - my old fluid was like drinking chocolate by the time the Benz reversal of policy on changing fluid came out - Nothing in the pan but a slight dusky haze on the filter - Oh what a feeling!!!!
