I just made the same point earlier....makes me love my 32 all the more.
Just too much money for an ulgy nose job, scuffy interior. Oh the V8 rumble would be nice, but not for that money. Even if they guy is being generous. Not with a 63 around the corner.
Late last year, I also 'briefly' looked at a 06 SLK55, in red, IT WAS PRETTY, except that front...
in addition to the Math also not working out for me. BUT I had an unexpected chance to pick up an 02 SLK32, and am LOVING it. I still have a few things to check and fix on it. I bought it wholesale with no warrantly left on it. At this point, I need to align the front end, and verify that I do not have the PSE problem. I have some of the symptoms. I really did like the sound of the SLK55 better than the SLK32, but I still think that my SLK230 with the Pulley Kit and Brabus exhaust sounds better than both.
Although the SLK32 AMG suspension makes the steering feel better than that of other R170 SLKs, the R171 steering is much better.
The engine note of the SLK32 AMG sounds great - if you get a chance to put your foot fully down! But no sooner have you done that, than you've already reached the legal limit. I can honestly say that I've rarely had the chance to do that - the merest squeeze and I'm doing 60 (honestly, officer!).
But the Channel tunnel and the Autobahns beckon..[]
That was one thing I had read about before buying the 32, that the recirculating ball steering left a lot to be desired and the rack and pinion in the SLK 350 was so much better. I didn't want to spend the money for a 350 and don't really like the nose anyway so I didn't even test drive one. That being said, I like the steering in the 32, I guess I don't know what I'm missing.
Seems to flatten out and get better at 80 plus on the highway. Just seems the 32 is a bit edge. Thats why I don't turn off ESP.
