V6 MAF cleaning - how far did you go ?

I CEL\MIL light on SLK, - code 173, and decided to try cleaning the MAF, i don't remember anybody posting about having any luck with it.

I wounder how far did you go with cleaning ?

I actualy took apart the MAF and found a dirty thing in it ? Did anybody try cleaning it ?

I plan to put everything back together tonight - so i don't have any results yet.

Here some pics:

#1 MAF unit - i took two screws out and pulled the actual sensor, had to use robogrip to get screws out screw head is star with stud in a middle - nothing that i got in my screwdriver bits.

#2 Dirty thing i believe the actual sensor is.

Be really careful with it. Don't use carb cleaner. Use electrical contact cleaner and air. I'd try to get the kind that's safe for use with paper tape/electrical tape.

It seems that one should be able to clean these without damaging them, but every shop person I know says that it can't be done. I don't understand why, since it's just a calorimeter type of setup. Anyway, good luck. I have cleaned mine, and it seems to have survived (I'm still running it).

RE: V6 MAF cleaning - how far did you go ?

I am currently running under your situation (see "No Power") post. I pulled the MAF and sprayed a bunch of carb cleaner thru it and reset the CEL by pulling the bat terminal. Ive been running a week now and the CEL has not returned[:)] yet. The first couple days after, the car still ran poorly. Over the past 3 days or so there has been an increase in power and smoother shifting (computer readjusting the air readings?) Im gonna drive thru another tank of fuel and see if it keeps improving. Ive gone from about 60% power to 90% over the last week. Hopefully the car will work it out! [8D]

Some people have had temporary success with cleaning the MAF (hehe, I haven't [:p]) - just spray it with eletrical cleaner to take all the filth off of the film and try it for a while. If the CEL comes back or it runs bad, you might have to replace it.

Did you guys actually got to the piece i have on my 3rd pic ?

I wiped it using RadioShacks contact cleaner - basically isopropil (sp) spirit (alcohol) and black stuff came off nicely - i am not really worried about damaging it - because it don't really work now anyway ;)

I didn't have that funky bit either, so I never took the eliment out of the tube. I like the Robo Grip idea and might try that if things dont improve any better.[8D]
