99 SLK 230 problem

Well, my daughter just had her first problem with her new (to her) SLK. She had been driving with the top down and attempted to raise it. The front of the trunk rose up, as it should,. and then nothing but a flashing light on the top up/down button. No strange sounds or smells. The car has 46K miles and is pristine. The former owner is my friend, who never had this problem since he bought it new.

Any ideas??

Thanks,
Richard

That's normal - the roof is not supposed to be raised or lowered while driving above 3-5 mph. MB is afraid of the roof mechanism be bent by undue wind forces, in fact, once this happens, you must bring the car to complete stop to re-engage the roof mechanism. However, you can buy aftermarket hardware to extend the speed limit to ~20 mph - see http://frontiernet.net/~dbipes/SLK/remote/index.htm

Tom:

I guess I wasn't very clear. Daughter PARKED the car before trying to raise the top.

Thanks,
Richard

The roof switches that AmericanPie mentions were problematical in the late '98 and early to ....

mid '99 SLK's. Until you change out the switches, you can stick your fingers in the brush like area on the right side of the trunk, there is a switch there as well that sometimes hangs up. Wiggle that switch and you may be OK.

RE: 99 SLK 230 problem

Thanks all:

I have emailed this thread, and the thread cited by AmericanPie, to my daughter in Durango Colorado. There is no dealer there, but there is an Indy shop that works on MBs. She will print all this off and take it to that shop tomorrow. The problems mentioned in the thread cited by AmericanPie sound just like what she has experienced. Hopefully, it will be a simple fix.

Thanks, all,
Richard[:)][:)][:)]

RE: 99 SLK 230 problem

One problem I had when I first bought my 230 was not a faulty switch but rather a sprung luggage cover spring which didnt have enough tension to correctly engage the switch. You might want to check the tension and adjust if necessary.
