Re-Program Your Keys

I was at Mercedes today and they gave me a new key for my car and it was dead. I asked how to program a blank key and they tech told me to put the key in and out 10 times and it will program it. Sure enough it worked.... little scary if you get a blank key and do it 10 times on a car you can deactivate the alarm and gain access to the car later. EEEK!

RE: Re-Program Your Keys

I think the key itself has to match the key hole too. I don't think the remote will be programmed if the key doesn't fit.
When you said, put the key in and out, you meant in the ignition? Do you need to turn the key to position 1, 2?

RE: Re-Program Your Keys

mercedes sold me a key blank already ground to my car for $5.00 all i had to do was give them the vin number.

there's a little pin holding the key to the keyfob that will let you swap the keys out.

RE: Re-Program Your Keys

Hey deathrage. Did you get the key or the key w/ remote for $100? I was talking about the key only.
Have you tried using other MB key to program it in that way? I'd like to know if this programming will work...

RE: Re-Program Your Keys

my key has a button I push it pops out like a switch blade it also has the buttons on it it is not just a key. They key was dead it would start my car but not unlock my car once I did this 10 times it set the key programming up to unlock my car.

I guess I am not distinguishing the difference between my KEY and the Remote. I think of them as the same thing because it is one unit. This is also my 1st car with remote entry. I dont have nor do I know anyone else with a mercedes benz that has a key that i can try this on. My friend has a benz but its this weird square chip key.

If I noobed this post up I appologize now.

RE: Re-Program Your Keys

Hey Deathrage. That is not the bad price. I got just the key blade for $40... (used to be called 'valet' key). I ordered it as the reserve key.
I wish someone with two mercedes can try this.

RE: Re-Program Your Keys

I bought one of the remote key fobs from ebay. I tried just about everything that I could do to get it to work to no avail. I switched the blade from my old key to the ebay one, and when I started my car, it died about one second later. Everything back to normal when I put the blade back on my old fob and started my car.

A few months ago I lost my key and had to purchase a new one. About $130 IIRC. The keyless entry didn't work initially, but after placing it in and out of my ignition a few times it worked.

I talked to four dealers about reprogramming the ebay fob. 2 said they could do it, 2 said it could not be done. I haven't had them try yet, so I can't report on that.
