who wins 0 to 60, 1/4 mile: SLK32 or 1997 Cobra Mustang cab, with the indicated mods:
2003 SLK32 with Renntech Pulley and ECU mod. I think it adds about 50HP.
1997 Cobra Mustang Convertible has supercharger with 6psi , no intercooler, I think he said it puts his car at 450HP. I don't know if that's at the rear wheels though.
Also, how would a stock SLK32 fare?
I could get more info on the car if I knew what to ask.

I speak from experience, since I raced many factory cobra sc's with my SLK32.
Ok, first off, and most important, is driver. The Cobra guy must know how to shift quickly, and launch the steed. The SLK32 guy must turn off the traction control and air conditioning compressor and let the car do the rest. SLK32 owner should race from a stop as he "odds are good" will have an advantage here regarding initial traction. SLK32 guy should do practice race starts beforehand to see what works best. SLK32 has the upper hand here, it is up to the owner to make the most of it.
Now on to modifications. The Cobra has the upper hand here. SLK32 will get approx 40 rwhp from Renntech ECU and pullies. That is it. 20 rwhp more if he does the renntech cams. Cobra can get much more than this depending on the amount of boost chosen by the owner through his choice of pullies. Renntech wants the car to have some longevity. The aftermarket ford suppliers could care less. So more boost! So the Cobra can produce more power, and judging from your friend's estimation probably does. Please keep in mind most aftermarket companies, renntech not included, exaggerate their horsepower numbers for better sales.
Now Cobra convertibles are heavy, much heavier than the coupe and the SLK32; convertible ford is around three hundred pounds heavier than coupe. That is roughly 30 horses taken away. So here is an advantage to the SLK32. Also, ALL cobras farall on their face after 135mph due to gearing and barn door aerodynamics. So race a mile long race or something. You will devastate even the fastest Cobra above 150mph as the SLK32 is still in the meat of gearing and powerband, while the cobra is not and has horrible aerodynamics to boot.
And holy cow, you said a '97 Cobra didn't you! Aw crap. Well, everything holds true what I said about the SLK32, and the cobra as well regarding gearing and aerodynamics.
You will kill it. I have raced aftermarket supercharged 32V cobras too.
6psi will not be enough to compensate, unless he has a sneaky pete system. Either way if he wins, he'll deserve it, cause his car motor gonna boom muy pronto. Yours will not.
This is what I get trying to type early in the morning after a long night of partying and drinking. Ugh my head hurts. Although I think I sold a few passengers on a 745i's speed capability last night. At least no one got sick, although they did get sauvignon blanc on their shirts. Not on the car.
Thanks for your detailed reply. I'll see if I can find out a little more on his mods....
I don't have the mod to my SLK32 yet, so it's still stock. I was thinking of getting it either this year or next. And stil not sure which mod. I'm shooting for just the ECU and the pulley.
RE: Thanks for your detailed reply. I'll see if I can find out a little more on his mods....
DaveS, probably a good idea to wait a year or so for upgraded pulley & ECU. While it is an unpopular sentiment here I am waiting to see what the Crossfire SRT6 brings from the aftermarket. I would love to get an LSD.
RE: Thanks for your detailed reply. I'll see if I can find out a little more on his mods....
Let me save you some money here. I did the Renntech ECU first and there was NO horsepower gain. It did get rid of the speed limiter though.
Next I did the renn. pullies and wham! There was the gain! All 40 rwhp of it.
So, just do the pullies and save yourself around 1.5k to 2k dollars if you can live with the top speed limiter. I couldn't, but hey I am a little over the top speedwise.
Also, your stock SLK32 should be a very close race to the 6psi sc '97 cobra. Too close to call.

No I never dyno'd the car. I just raced the crap out of it usually twice a week. All sorts of racing. I can honestly say that by racing the same cars in the same conditions, before and after with the same drivers, that the pullies really did give right around 40 rwhp. No BS. Basic physics here. Nearly two decades of constant racing under my belt to back it up. Yes I surely have been fooled in the past, this was not one of those instances. Renntech was truthful, as they should be for the price paid. It was worth it.
