What is Avantgarde and Elegance Badges?....

Recently, I was in Paris and Hong Kong and saw lots of Mercedes with these badges. What do they mean, and do they come in SLK trim, like the Designo?

RE: What is Avantgarde and Elegance Badges?....

That brings up another question I have. Where can I get those Kompressor badges like on the sides. I have 98 SLK230, and I am planning on taking off the 230 in the back and adding Kompressor badge on the right.

They are trim levels...

They are trim levels, very much the same as LX, DX, and EX for Hondas.

Mercedes has 3 trim levels for the A-, C-, and E-class sedans: Classic (basic), Avantgarde (sporty), and Elegance (luxury). The CLK has only Avantgarde and Elegance. Sometimes options are tied to particular trim levels (e.g. if you want the 17" wheel option, you must buy the Avantgarde trim level).

In the USA, they are marketed a bit differently. The base US-spec versions are Elegance. The C-class Sport models, the E-class "Appearance package", and the CLK500 are all based on Avantgarde versions.

Other models (i.e. CL, G, ML, S, SL, SLK) do not have multiple trim levels, so to answer your second question: No, they don't come in SLK trim.

He might have been telling the truth...

The US-spec CLK430 is based on the Avantgarde trim, and I've read about at least two C-class sedans that had Elegance badges on them from the factory. It's just a matter of putting the wrong mouldings on the door or fender at the factory.

Funny story: A coworker ordered a brand new Dodge Dakota V8. She picked it up and had it a week and noticed that one of the front fenders had a "V8" badge and the other fender had a "V6" badge.
