SUMMARY-
-Has anyone experienced that some replacement keys purchased from the dealer do not work? Or perhaps seem to work on everything other than start the car?!
-What about keys that suddenly stop working on you?

FULL DETAILS(if interested)-

Okay, so I want to get an extra spare key for my '01 slk 320 - Key's available are:
(1) Remote (master) key
(2) 'Flat'/'Chopped Off' (master) key
(3) Round (valet) key

Placed an order for a 'flat' key (economical reasons compared to the remote key) and picked it up at the dealer. The newly made 'flat' key was able to open doors/trunk/glove box...although when I tried the ignition, I'm able stick the key in, turn it pass position 2(accessories), and the car seems to start initially, but dies back down giving a start error. I give it a few more tries and no luck. I try the original remote key and everything is fine.

I start to wonder if something is unique about the flat keys that requires me to do something different from the remote key, so I try starting the engine with the _original_ flat key that came with the key and surely it starts w/o doing anything special.

So I bring the newly made flat key back to the dealer thinking that they've must have made the keys wrong. One guy tells me that I'm not supposed to have more than 1 of those flat keys since that's supposed to be your spare and making extra copies of those keys will not work - a 'security feature.' It turns out that the guy who told me this was full of it and mistakened the keys I was talking about with some types of keys for other models of MB. At this point, they've already got an order for me to get extra 'valet' keys instead since that seemed like a viable alternative considering the remote keys where MUCH more expensive.

So my valet key came and I went to the dealer to pick it up. The parts people said how weird it seemed for the other 'flat' key I originally ordered not to work, but could do everything else. So we decide to give it another try with those keys. Fine, those keys were just screwed up. The newly made 'valet' key works. Great. I go to talk with my salesperson about this and they seemed baffled as well.

Returning to my car to go home, I use my original _remote_ key to start the car - IT SUDDENLY DOESN'T WORK! I go have another talk to the parts people and they are clueless! I retested all the other keys and nothing else changed - thank goodness!

At this point, they have placed an order for me to have the 'remote' key replaced (the other remote key that came with the car still works). As much as I'd like to think that this is still a 'KEY' issue, I won't be taking in my car for a checkup of the ignition system until one more weirdism strikes...

Thoughts/comments/similar experiences very much welcomed!
