When asked why, the MB representatives at the desk said "It's basically the same body style as the SLK 230 on the floor. No real differences." Some reps, huh?
I don't know about M-B manufacturers, but I've talked to people working auto shows at other manufacturers' displays that were just hired to do a piece of the show circuit after only a day or two of training.
I've also read that M-B uses local dealers' salespeople to do some of their shows and they distribute the show cars to those same local dealers after the show is over.
I saw an AutoWeek (??) show about the Detroit (again ??) show, and the SLK32 was there. Bizarre...
Bizarre that it would be at that show (wherever it was), but not in NY. In my mind's eye, I paint the NY show as a pretty major event.
Well, better for us, I guess. If the buzz is kept down, it'll be easier for us to get our AMG's!
It's really a dealer show, not a manufacturer show...
It's supported by the New York area dealer's association, and manufacturers may choose more/less support. It seemed like most of the exhibitors had maybe one or two new things or concept cars to show, but a lot of stuff I expected to see (like the SLK32) were not in evidence. Got to sit in the new BMW M3 convertible though. MUCH nicer than the old one! And the seats are SO much better than my SLK320. Saw the new MB Sport Coupe and found it pretty disappointing in the flesh. The AMG CLK55 more than made up for it though. Dark tinted glass and locked doors made the AMG interior hard to see, however.
The new Ford Thunderbird was there (in red and baby blue versions), Volvo concept car, and more "crossover" vehicles than you could shake a stick at (and most of them should have been beaten with a stick).
