Hi all,

I'm very new to Mercedes, but due to rising gas prices, and the fact that I'm entering college this fall, I'm parting with my International SII, and looking into getting a car. I'm really hot ont he idea of a 190D. This is mostly for the mileage reasons, since diesel is cheaper than regular unleaded in most cases, and renders better econemy from what I hear. I do not know what year model I want, but I've been looking around, seeing all of them up to about 1989's fairly cheap, as in under $7,000. I'm looking to spend between $6,000 and $7,000 max. Is this realistic to obtain one that runs well, needs no work, and has a reasonable mileage reading? Also, is the 190D a good model to own? Are they reliable, and how expensive are they to maintain in relation to a Japanese or American car? About how long do the engines usually last before needing overhaull, and is the four cylinder the better option, or the five? One more thing...how sluggish are they with an auto transmission? Thanks to anyone who helps out this newby here.
Thank you,
A 190D can be a good car if it's been well cared for. Unfortunately, the chances of finding such a car are slim. Old M-B diesels are notoriously finicky. Repairs are rather expensive unless you're a do-it-yourselfer with alot of extra time to chase down parts sources.
You might get better opinions on the MercedesShop forums. They seem to be more knowledgable about older MBs.
....stay away from any 190D made before 1987-88! These were not well made cars at all!!!

The better model was made in 1988 in the form of the 190D-2.5 which had a smoother, quieter and peppier engine. My brother-in-law still owns one that he originally purchased in 1988; it has over 250k miles and still purring! I've been impressed with that model year 190D quality!
Before purchasing any used MB diesel from anyone, spend the $160 or so and have an authorized MB service center inspect the car completely for all defects and parts that may need replacement soon! They will provide a listing and possible repair costs. This approach will save you a lot of headaches as any MB car that is abused or not properly maintained can be very costly to repair and recondition!!! I'm relating to you some of my 18 years of experiences of owning and maintaining various models of MB diesels and gas models.
Don't buy on impulse, especially if you have very little experience in buying used cars! If it sounds too good to be true, it probably is, but there are indeed some jewels out there that will serve you well even after you graduate and start a family! The key is to look for maintenance records! Generally, if the previous owner changed engine oil and filter and followed the recommended MB service guide, it's highly probable the car is in great shape! If the prospective car was maintained at an MB dealership, you can talk to a Service Adviser to find out about its service record by providing the VIN. They store service info in the MB computer!
Good hunting! Let me know if you need more info.

That seems to be some solid advice there. I wish that there was some deal where you could get an International inspected in such a way, but.....being that their no longer in the light vehicle business. If I decide to get an MB, I'll most likely try the $160 inspection to avoid the headaches I've experienced in the past with my oddball binders. Thanks once again.
