Info on blind-spot mirrors...

My friend form Spain just sent me the MB rear view mirrors that the European models have. In case anyone wants to know the part numbers for them are:
A 208 810 09 21
A 208 810 10 21
More data, please? Glass? Housing? What's different?

Are you talking the glass or the housing or both? What's different between the Euro parts and the US spec parts?

Sounds like they're split mirrors designed to fit into the existing housing ...

I have them on my TT, and they connect to the stock heaters and greatly improve visibility. The folks on the TT forum discovered the same thing (i.e., that the mirrors on European TTs were of the split variety), and got one of the importers to start carrying them. They're terrific.
See the link below for a picture of the mirrors I'm referring to to get an idea of what they look like.

Did you replace them yourself? Was it a trivial procedure?

It wasn't tough, but it's much easier after you do the first one (more...)

I used a plastic putty knife wrapped in a cloth to wedge between the housing and the mirror. On the TT there were 3 connection points, and once you get the first one to unsnap it's easier to get the others off. The biggest risk is that the OEM mirror will crack, and if you're not planning on reusing them, that's not a real problem (oh, I was forgetting about the 7 years ... ;-) ) Anyway, assuming you have heated mirrors, you just connect the wires and snap the new one in making sure not to stress any part of the mirror more than any other. As long as you're careful, it's easy to do; just don't force it. All this, of course, assumes the ones on the SLK are similiar to the TT. (I never changed the mirrors on my SLK, but now that I see the difference with the split mirrors I wouldn't hesitate for a minute to do it.)

Here's a PDF file with instructions and photos on the TT...

Looks like my memory was a bit faulty: There are 4 connection points.

Why aren't these mirrors stock on US SLKs? Who makes them for MB, does anyone know?

I installed the mirrors yesterday...

...and the procedure was slightly different than in the TT. However, it wasn’t hard to figure out how to take the old mirrors out and replace them once I saw the supports in the back of the new mirrors.
