Supercharger engaged at cold startup

I have noticed that the supercharger on my 2000 SLK seems to be engaged when the engine is started cold and stays engaged for a few minutes while the engine warms up. Is this normal and does anyone know the reasons for this?

It helps the catalytic converters to warm up.....

It's part of the emissions controls and is normal.

If the engine temp is <~60 degC, the SC will be on.

I can hear mine cut out well before that. Seems like it cuts out at...

about the point where the needle moves (40deg.C). I could be wrong though.

Mine stops before any needle movement, after about 20s (nt).

Mine seems to wait until the needle moves closer to 60.
