I checked the "Everything about the Mercedes-Benz SLK" book and it doesn't say, but it looks like air-to-air from what you can see on the car. There is the funny thing with the fuel lines running through a small block that also has the A/C refrigerant lines going into it, so the fuel must be cooled when the A/C is running.
The stock and a new larger intercooler. If you can find those photo's you can see that it's an air to air intercooler. They generally are cheaper to build and work well if you have the space available.
