learn from this

I was just reading about the K&N and the possible damage that can be caused to the MAF. When I was struggling with an engine problem (ended up being a bad MAF - $400 part) I discovered that there is a second air filter inside the main air filter housing. It is a little foam piece of junk right in from of the valve for the SC. My filter was in very poor shape and virtually crumbled in my hands when I took it off to clean it. I'll never know, but I speculate that a piece of the filter probably got sucked in and screwed up the MAF...I took the MAF out and cleaned it, and the car ran much better but not perfectly. It would make sense that a little bit of the foam melted on the hot wire and screwed the thing up.

It just might be worth checking for the rest of you. I ended up just leaving the foam filter off altogether.

RE: learn from this

can you tell me how to remove this filter? I saw it one day inside the tube before the bypass valve but could not figure out how to remove it.

Thanks,
Randall

RE: learn from this

Great. I think that is just what I sought[:D]. This post will roam to my car mechanic.
Occasionally I experience extremely similar thing:
1.esp. when I accelerate the car has a one second "gap" in the middle of accelerating
2. If I really push it all the way (esp. upwards), after e.g. 15-20 minutes it loses power (can't make it more than 160-170km/h)[V]
3. Best of all... after I stop driving like this the engine shakes like crazy and looks like it will stop (but it doesn't). The shaking behaviour (the Symptoms) end when I restart the engine.

It's kinda hard to tell your mechanic what happens if you can not recreate it (unless you give him a 20-minute testdrive fullthrottle[:P]).
Great. Thanks again for info.
BTW: If someone has similar experience tell us how it was solved.

how I removed it

There was a plastic cage of sorts that held the thing in place. I ended up breaking it to pieces in order to get the filter out. Not the best solution, but I could not find any other way, as it looked like it was designed as a permanent setup.

RE: how I removed it

Well, a new one is only $113.00 (part # 111 090 00 01 - for 1998 model). It does come a part, you have several clips you have to unclip and then you have to remove two hoses from the top part of the air cleaner housing; to open it up correctly. Should vacuum the inside out before putting in a new filter.

Thanks

I think I'll order one up as well as heed your advice about vacuuming (I never did that)

I've fixed so much (battery, MAP, mirror switch, shifter, window seal, and more) in the past months....I better start talking to my SLK instead of just swearing at her.

RE: learn from this

Well, been at my mechanic. We hooked up the computer and it showed air sensor error and lambda error (he said lambda error is the result of the problem with MAF). So tomorrow I get a new MAF and we will see.
