Good day Andy,
I had problems with starting my 1999 SLK230 this summer and also sometimes in the fall. MB dealer told me that I needed an electronic module upgrade, which they did last Friday under warranty (took only 20 minutes!). This seems too have made the engine run a lot smoother (and quieter) at startup. Even if your car is not under warranty, it seems to be worth it. The MB dealer need to order a part from the factory though (must a PROM of some sort).
There is a transponder in there, but it doesn't have a memory and it's not powered by the battery in the key. It's still possible that it malfunctioned, but it's unclear without a description of the symptoms.
If the engine turned, it's probably not the battery...
If you just heard a click or nothing at all, or if the engine turned really slowly, it could be the battery.
