I just purchased a 1998 SL500 and need some bits and pieces. One thing I can't seem to find are the vanity mirror door replacements. I've searched the forum and found older posts that refer to parts available, but cannot find those parts anymore (eg, at parts.com). Any info you can give me would be great! Thanks.
I didn't spend hours searching, but at least in EPC it looks like those "doors" aren't available separately, or if they are, they are somewhere deeper in the data...
Often when they are missing, you can actually see that the "hinges" in the visor where they are attached to have become brittle and broke and you couldn't even attach a new door.
Yes, the doors are missing because the ears that the door pins slide into break off. I just glued mine shut with shoe goo, but I believe these might be able to be fixed with a short length of metal tube with an inner diameter just slightly larger than the door pin and then epoxied onto the visor. Perhaps a hobby or craft store would have a workable tube or maybe McMaster.
Note that my search was the black p/n, 129 810 23 17 9051, and it is the whole mirror piece with door. For the price, you'd just about be better off finding a good pulled whole visor on eBay or something. I just put one in that I'd gotten at the previous pricing ($60 ish) last summer when I noticed mine was loose on one side. Another option, of course, is to just glue or velcro the door on and say to heck with it.
Welcome to forum, fogdog! Kudos to you for filling out your profile! I hope you will find BW a great source of info. How about a picture of your new ride? I have a '98 SL500 myself and it truly a great car.
There is a german side and i met the guy, who makes all colours in china, as rhe black ones are the only still available via the mercedes dealer, if you need an other colour than black let me know, i look up in my files what the side is.
I've been looking for years! So I'm interested in this. None of our cars have intact visor mirror covers. In fact, I went to a blog the other day where a guy replaced the covers with those for another MB model, but to do it he had to remove the mirror. And I was all excited because those exposed mirrors drive me crazy when driving!
Hi and now i see it is the friendly chiropractor from sarasota ! Here is the site : all colours, they are not genuine mb but well made, and the guy has more than this if you see on the site. For you of course i could bring them in july when i am over as now i live most of the time in belgium which is about 100 miles from this german shop, of course if impatient, you can have them shipped ! Have a look!
Awesome! Since we have time, and the site lists the unit as fitting other MB's, I'm gonna try and find a w124 and see if I can make them work. I'll let you know how that goes and if I still need them!
When mine broke I removed the pin, coated it in grease, filled the broken lugs with epoxy and slid the pin back in. The grease stopped the epoxy setting on the pin. Its a little notchy in operation so I just swapped it to the drivers side (as I never use it).
Point for all to note.
If you have the roof down and your other half uses the mirror but doesn't close the flap but just returns the visor to its normal position DON'T close the roof!!!:twak:
Like everyone else, my mirrors have problems. Anybody know what other model mirrors might fit? I lost the whole assembly on the passenger side, and the lid off of the drivers side. HELP!
I bought a pair from the German parts company highlighted in one of the previous posts here. They have all the colors. Got them quickly, and they are very nice. It s the mirror and cover assembly, not including the lighting fixture. It snapped right in place and match the color exactly. A bit pricey, but solved my problem.
