I am sure that it is like the M103 - there was 1 bolt that was a @#$%^ to remove. Snap-On finally made a tool for it - a 13mm swivel socket on a long extension
It's a 6mm socket-head cap screw that's stuck, now stripped Hence the Irwin bolt grips. If they dont work the only other way I can see in is to remove the inlet manifold.
Did it twice on M104's. Both times got to the last (different) bolt before I stripped one. Found this the second time thru. Made pulling that stripped head hella easier.
Ah yes low profile :smile. I think I'll get the Irwin jobbies in, if not the bolt holding the back cover of the water pump can come out giving more space. :grin
And btw, since I know, sometime in the future, I too would have to replace that pump, is there a write up somewhere for M104 and the water pump replacement?
If any of you are interested that Snap_on extension/swivel was made just for that 1 bolt. I can go out and see if there is a part# but you see them on eBay periodically.
Well finally found some time and okayish weather to complete the job.
Book time 4 hrs, took me about 7 :eek
Not too bad considering
a) 1st time I've done the job on this car
b) I had to contend with stripped bolts
c) A bit of time spent back flushing the cooling system and heater (didn't really need it, came out nice and clear :smile)
d) I work quite slowly, cleaning, lubing and triple checking everything
c) My drive has a 15% gradient so I have to keep retrieving tools from the gutter!
I didn't think the old pump was too bad, but the new one runs more quietly, so pleased I did it. :wink
IIRC on my M103 300E just to get to that one difficult bolt you had to go though all kinds of stuff, like dropping the mount that held the a/c compressor.
After that I bought that Snap-On extension but never had to change the w/p again.
