1995, sound system is old and very tired...
I Had a chance to remove the door panel to replace my larger cracked grill - very tired Bose. Distorted shape, water damage, no wonder it sounds the way it does. At the same time, I don't ever recall having great stage/presence out of this factory set. Little woofer though, I have to give it props for being able to deliver good amount of mid/lower bass from such compact driver. It will however, soon all be replaced. After measuring all the cavities and openings, decided to do the following:
3-way components with semi-active x-over network (midranges+tweeters will run from KEF KE 3 passives), woofers and sub from active x-over
Ordered mids, tweeters and woofers this morning.
- Tweeters (1") will go in the dash - popped the covers off yesterday to explore, plenty of room to adjust the future tweeters position/angle.
- Mid range (3") should fit perfectly into stock locations
- Woofers (7") will take a little creative work to make the "fit", since the diameter is larger than stock, so is the mounting depth, but I'm pretty sure I can make these work.
- Subwoofer (10"), will make a box to replace the stock Bose... Considering making it down-firing, so I don't have to cut into the compartment cover, but I will if I have to...
So that's the plan. I have the sub, the amp, x-overs, all the installation materials (and more, accumulated from years of fiddling with sound systems). I've been wanting to do a 3-way components in the front for quite some time, and after looking at the guts of the factory system - provisions are perfect for that! She should sound beautiful in the spring!
Regards,
D
