From MY I can assume it is 722.6 transmission?
MAVA might confirm it, but to my knowledge the shifter is just an electric switch with only safety linkage going to brake pedal.
Don't those MY have a hole for pen override?
Manual can be your friend.
I think for legal purpose the production data would be more important.
MY comes often with changes, so if new MY start in July, parts from the same year car made in June might not fit.
Same with some controls.
I just run the issue going to junk yard looking for parts for my 1998 5l engine.
My engine has electronic ignition with coils on top of the engine, while 1993 still has distributor.
So even theoretically they are the same 5l engines, they have quite different parts.
In this case MY can be important as at about this year MB changed the shifter to G-tronic, even the transmission is still the same.
Funny my 1998 E class had ESP, while 1998 SL only ASR, even they have the same transmissions.
if it is like the 97 vintage linkage, I'd suspect that the issue is the interlock between the mechanical linkage transition to electronic isn't working and is inhibiting the electronic shift movement.
PRND are mechanical, 4,3,2,1 selection is electronic.
You need to pop the console out and remove the shifter cover to inspect for rust in the linkages. You can use PB blaster and leave it overnight to unfreeze with gentle movements.
You can go to the beginning of the thread to confirm that it is the correct shifter type (PRND->4321) rather than PRND+-.
