Hi guys,

So I refurbed all of the cylinders. All good, no leaks. Had the controller sent in and it is checked out as good. However, the top is not working and still not engaging. Only the roll bar works. I did notice a few things while reinstalling the controller. The mechanic I took it to said that it is setting off a bunch of faults saying that many switches are bad. Which sounds kind of unlikely to me.

-There is one line that makes a hissing sound when the doors are unlocked. I've looked at other photos and it appears it should have a cap on it?

-There is a connector that looks like it may be a defrost plug on the passenger side, but there is one on the driver side. Can't seem to find where it hooks into? I've attached photos of both.

I'm assuming now I need to do some sort of resyncronization to get the top working? Car is a 99 SL500

The top operations are hydraulic and the hissing sound you heard at the door locks is vacuum, so they are unrelated problems.
If your mechanic actually found faults (and not just guessing), I assume he found it with scanner, so why would you think it is unlikely ?

Switches are simple devices that are either ON or OFF, but they could be mis-aligned. You said you just had your cylinders 'refurbed', who did that and who did the installation ? Could they be hooked up wrong ? or the switched bumped out of positions ?

The operation of all of the switches can be checked easily as explained here.

There is one line that makes a hissing sound when the doors are unlocked.
Perhaps that is the pneumatic line for locking the latch for one of the rear storage compartments.

next step

Controller module is tested and good

With the top closed: and button pressed to open the top. Back cover pops up, top pops up from boot to 90 degree position, then nothing.

With the top open: Boot cover pops up, then NOTHING.

Looking at this tutorial to "adjust the soft top limit switch." Where is this? Can you access it with the boot cover open? Or do you need to pull apart the interior carpet to get in there? I'm looking at it and it is different from the photo on the drivers side. I only see one relay against the wall instead of 2 as shown in the photo. I don't see this adjustment screw.

From what you posted nothing warrants a focus on this particular switch (S84/3). I would be looking at all of the switches using the method referenced in my earlier post.

At any rate, the location of S84/3 is shown here. Your car has a different version of the switch which looks very different and has no adjustment screw.

Before replacing switch's I would test them with a continuity meter, mine are over 25 years old and all work, it may just have been bumped and needs straightening. when I got my car, it had codes saying 2 switch's were the issue, I found the rubber boots on micro switch's were stuck in down position from lack of use causing the controller issue, freed them up and system came to life.

switch

Just had the a22s1 switch replaced. the only top code faulted on the diagnostic.

SAME RESULT.

Top bootcover opens and rear latches function but top will not move up or down!

Good grief.

Computer module good. Lines good, seals good, cylinders good. Still won't work

front latches

So when i open the top from closed. Soft top raises up from back to vertical, but the boot cover does not raise and the front latches are tightening to grap the top and locking in instead of opening.

boot cover is supposed to raise after the soft top goes vertical. It will pop open when the top is open and you hit the close button.

This suggests the roof controller is not receiving a signal from the limit switch S84/6. Since your cylinders were recently replaced this could be due to an incorrect orientation of the attachment of the rod of the bow cylinder (picture, red circle). Note that one side is thicker (yellow circle), and this presses against the switch when the cylinder retracts. If the orientation is reversed the microswitch does not engage.

Thanks Bob

I got that code as well but I could find NO part number for that switch. Do you know what the part number is?? I called a specialist who also could not find it. Also that looks identical to the a22s1 switch that I already replaced. Are there two of these? for up and down?

switch faulty does NOT mean the switch is BAD!!! It means the controller did not see the switch opening or closing as it expected. In most cases that means the switch just needs adjustment to open or close at the proper time in the sequence.
