You can start "high-grading" the most likely cause(s) of the misfire, if you get a scan diagnosis and determine if the misfire is coming from just one cylinder.... then ERASING the Fault Code, and trigger the misfire again, and REREAD the Fault Code.
If the misfire stays with just one (and the same) cylinder, you can start focusing on a bad plug, bad coil, or bad injector.
If the misfires move around from cylinder-to-cylinder, then it is most likely a higher order problem, and not the injector, or plug wire/boot, etc., but water in the Fuel Rail, Sensors(s), low grade gasoline, etc.

MBCox- suggest you watch this video series on determining your fault(s) on the M104 engine (300SL-24 power plant) by Kent Bergsma. It will take you through the steps to test the main systems and see what might be ailing that engine. Although he uses a W124 (300E) the systems are close to identical, just moved around.
It will take you about an hour to watch, you'll be able to eliminate the simplest potential issues right away and home in on the likely faults. Also, you'll likely need a "blink" OBD-1 reader to check if your computer has see any electrical faults. You can buy one on eBay for about $30 or make one yourself from directions on this forum for $10.
Just out of interest MBCox where exactly was the vacuum line split? I've been chasing and teased by a small, irregular hesitation at idle when warm for two years now. Any new clue is worth investigating.
Small vacuum pipe on the left hand side front of the manifold, which goes to the multi plug unit that is next to the diagnostic plug. Believe it is something to do with the ignition timing. Trying to put photo on. Nope not having any luck with that, but will keep trying. The split was on the 90 degree bend.https://www.dropbox.com/s/qc5ubcsby2902qk/IMG-20150404-WA0000.jpg?dl=0
Thank you for that good news, still not sure if it is fixed, took it out for a small run, all was good. Fixed it with a piece of new pipe. Hope this works.
