No reverse and rotational grrrrrring in forward gears and neutral, like something caught in there! Mimics the sound of a bad blender. This a B3 problem or...? Regardless, I'm going to put as many new pieces in it as I can find but for those in the know, I'd appreciate your opinions.
I've searched through threads here but none address the grinding noise.
Living in Maui everything is rare to find. It depends on the purchase price of the car.... I buy fixer-uper's for my own consumption. If you get the car for $1000, and you are willing to rebuild the transmission your self. It is a total bargain because I am restoring my $1000 SL320 and I repaired the top, repaired the sound system, suspension, new leather seats and the engine computer. You can say mine had a lot of flea's I fixed my self for cheap, and I have two more fix's-The car is on ramps, so i can fix the transmission my self.
If you are going to pay(pay a lot) to fix the transmission, I would get a car from the big island, or the main-land as one can find a SL something to ready to roll for $3k to $5k.
I rebuild these transmissions, and parts cost is about $700 here in the main-land with torque converter. The Service information is on this thread if you want to take a crack at it, but read each post, and follow each link:
Thanks for the responses. I am going to pull transmission out this weekend and rebuild myself.
I purchased the car for $800 and needs other things, but not on the priority list until after mobility has been restored. It has a new top as of last year. Front bumper bust up and failing clear coat and recent minor body work from an errant shopping cart incident. 132,xxx miles. Engine runs cherry and all electrics work. AC needs recharge.
Lets hope the air conditioning recharge isn't the ol "bring $ 4,000.00 for a new evaporator" story. Most of the time on the 129 it's evaporator unless you get lucky with a bad hose. You'll be getting "hosed" either way !:grin
If a recharge doesn't fix it, it will stay broken, indefinitely! If it had half the mileage, then maybe I'd be more inclined to repair it .
Originally I was just buying this car for the engine/transmission/differential,etc for my W123 280E engine swap instead of the M120 setup I have for it, but the ol' girl grew on me.
They are pretty awesome cars and still a DIY Mercedes,I would fix it and as far as a/c? hope its not the evaporator! I here that's a bitch of a job on R129,but doable. I'm doing the evap on my sons 92 W124 and its apart waiting for new parts, about $501,evap involves pulling dash and heater box out,its a 15 hr job,if you ever have to do it,replace all vacuum pods, heater core ,etc
A rebuilt trans going to cost, hope its something simple
No junk yards here and old Mercedes are rare here. There are probably no more than 10 of each model produced before 1995 here, dropping as they get older. Every part for my cars I have to order from around the world therefor progress on repairs is quite slow and expensive. Shipping costs alone sometimes run more than the parts and that's if they'll even ship to Hawaii, especially US mainlanders. I order from Australia and Europe mostly because of that, but super expensive on shipping. Being a Mercedes enthusiast here does get quite frustrating but life was the same back up in Alaska before I moved here. At least there I could drive to parts if push came to shove.
