500SL 5.0L Alum Block Defect...Questions??

Hello,

We have a 3,300 mile 500SL (Red/Tan) in outstanding condition (with soft & hard tops) that has been pampered for 23 years...since buying new, and discovered recently that the block deck apparently came with a defect in the casting, that eventually (after a whopping 3,300 miles) started to leak through the head gasket and give signs of a blown head gasket. None of the mechanics that have seen the car (including the MB Dealer) have "ever" seen anything like this before. It was NOT due to misuse or poor maintenance!

So, being that MB will not warranty it (they offered 10% off on the work or a new car), we are stuck. Not sure to fix or sell the car as-is, so that some enthusiast can deal with the engine issue and have a basically new (3,300 mile500SL)! Car has always been in a climate controlled garage also.

Two questions then:

1. Has anyone ever seen this sort of thing? I can try to post up a pic of the bad spot on the block.

2. What would you do if it were your car?

I appreciate any advice,

John (in PA)

How much is the cost to fix with the discount? That would be the deciding factor for me.

143 miles per year wow; wonder if the coolant was ever changed on a regular basis? Please do give us some pics of the problem area.

Sorry, I'm a newbie to this forum....I just figured I'd get the widest coverage in the general comments forum, since an engine problem like this could probably apply to any aluminum block MB engine. I will try to post a pic.

Thanks,

John

Wow decent blowout of the casting. Thats tragic. If its just a standard 5.0 blocks are relatively cheap or you may even try having someone weld and resurface that spot (I know it sounds odd but I have seen it done on locomotive blocks)
