1998 Sport Steering Wheel Interchangeable With W140 Wheel?

So I went to my dealer today to swap out my 1998 SL500 sport steering wheel for a 1996-1998 W140 wood steering wheel. I got bad news from the service advisor. I have no idea how, but somehow someone tampered with the airbag in the past. The two T30 torque screws that hold the airbag in place are not accessible because there seems to be broken drill bits in each socket! I was told the only way to remove the steering wheel is to cut the sides out of the airbag. It's about $200-$300 in labour, but thats not the issue.

The problem is the parts department and techs were not 100% sure that the W140 steering wheel would fit. If I cut the old steering wheel off..it's deemed useless. The shop foreman said that the steering wheel would most likely fit, along with the "single-stage airbag". The risk is I won't have horns that work. oh and something about a clock spring..which shouldn't be an issue. They cant guarantee anything, so I feel like I'm gambling. The service rep told me to sleep on it and come back, they took almost an hour assessing the situation and answering my questions, no charge of course.

Can the horns work on the W140 wheel (single push horn) after swaping out the factory sport wheel with button horns? What are the connections like? Compatible?? I can't drive without horns!

Any advice is appreciated!

It appears to me the one you intend putting on is complete in every way. If that's so, it should only be a matter of plugging the the air bag and the horn to it. If I remember correctly there is also 2 horn leads on the earlier pad anyway.

The worst case scenario is that you will have to get another air bag if you have to go back to the original wheel. But the non removal problem needs to be addressed anyway. It's Murphy's Law that you will need to remove the wheel at some stage, so really it's a win, win situation

Nice wheel the same as I put on my 92

Life begins at 240 kph!

Yes, it interchangeable.... If you get the steering & airbag.....

Horsepower: enough power to go from point A to point B
Torque: enough to get the car moving

0-60 mph: not in a rush
0-1/4 mile: about 5 minutes @ 2mph because no need to showoff

Pictures of my SL collection & Pictures of my S Class ride

My favorite topic, What kind of watch do you guys wear with your Benz...??

I swapped my standard 96' wheel for the 99+ style. It was a direct swap, the only thing tricky was the bolt that mounts the steering wheel itself. They are of very, very thin aluminum and strip if you just look at them. Other then that, it was a crazy easy job (and I'm not at all mechanical)!!

I have 1998 SL500 and the steering wheel makes squeaking noise when I drive. A little grease spay into crevice did not work and so I tried to pull out the wheel. But somebody said I need Torx T25 to unscrew two bold behind wheel but it does not seem to be the right size. Anyone give me a tip? T30 ?

T30 on my 1996, no doubts about it as I just swapped out wheels myself.

Before pulling the wheel out check rubber steering shaft housing (located near the pedals). My wheel squeaked too when rotated and I sprayed with silicone every hole in the wheel I could reach - no result. After that I tried WD-40 on the rubber mounting and voila - silence!

Sorry for raising this from the dead but I just bought a steering wheel from a 1999 SLK 300 which looks just like the SL wheel posted here but black. Will it fit my W140 1995 S500?
