They ALL have issues. See??? The bottom has dropped out on these cars. Its hard to even GIVE the damn things away. It would be my guess the R129's reputation suxs!
It's a shame if you ask me. Great car, except the nit noid BS problems don't make it worth owning for the average joe.

This one is easily worth 6grand parted out across ebay. And each one parted out, only makes them more rare and might drive the values back up to where they belong. Buy it for 2200 and CUT THAT SUCKER UP!

The last thing I need is a SL with issues, I have enough issues with one that doesn't have any issues

Ok just talked to the owner, here's the scoop, reverse linkage is bad,he says it wont go into reverse ,unless you give it gas? thinking trans is on its way out, that's the first sign! asked him did you check the fluid? he says I don't even know how to do that, duh, car sits at 173k, may just need a fluid flush and filter or trans, needs power steering pump,or fluid, headliner drooping ,easy fix, drivers window non opt, easy, soft top needs rear window, faded, but top operation works,no leaks ,has records from previous owner, says cars clean , A/C works ,engine runs great, body and paint clean, sounds like the guy knows nothing about R129's ,is willing to go down on price, he has not owned it long, not a bad deal if some one wants it. If you do Let me know, its only 8 miles away from me,I can check it out in person.

Most likely the last one, I have heard a ton of people say try changing the trans fluid and filter to see if it helps issue X, I've never heard someone later on respond "holy cr%# changing the fluid fixed it!" Usually its a trans overhaul that will fix it.

Thats what I was thinking,he was so hot and bothered about the crappy black one in Lake Elsinore for more cash ,it just a gamble, I told this guy Dan I know these cars and have others ,and do all my own work,he was very interested, I told him about the trans issue,he asks how much to fix that,my reply was around 3k for rebuilt trans and 1k for install? maybe lower,on my w124 similar trans,1500 for rebuild from Sun Vally Transmissions, they specialize in MB trans.

I had my transmission rebuilt for around $1.5k at a local shop; Similar issues, reverse went out and then 4th gear. The reverse was cause by a single bad seal; the lack of 4th gear was just wear caused by a clogged filter that burned everything up. If reverse is just starting to go out, you might be able to avoid a full rebuild (at least for awhile).

These cars are worth a lot, but only if you can do some of the work yourself; I've done thousands of dollars of work myself to maintain this car and if I couldn't do the work myself, I don't think I could justify the cost of ownership. That said, it's not too hard to get a good deal on an R129 with a couple of known issues.

Also want to point out that the wood center console is loose (clips broken), and the plastic trim around the driver's seat handle is broken, also has a broken antenna. The passenger seat control is also loose (broken clips, $20) and the arm rest button has been broken off (~$15, last I checked). I wouldn't be surprised if this car has been abused and in need of extensive interior repairs.
