Good plan. That's a good solution. Things that happen one time in a million are only a real bitch to the one ! I don't know how many wrecks you've had in your life. More than likely none. It's a pretty fair bet that you'll never stack up the Benz. With the belts and the cars other safety crush zones etc, you'd probably fair well. So, unplug that airbag and have a good time

Just make sure your seat belts are fully operational. I am not sure if your model year has the pre-tensioning feature.

yeah, we were trying to reproduce that... but none of the employees were willing to sit on top of the bag...

One of them proposed getting another bag out of my car to test next...

I regularly drive five other classic cars/trucks, all of which have no airbags. I think one more will not be any worse to my health. My personal solution will be to disable the diver and put a disabled takeout in the passenger.
I would expect that your auto insurance company won't be pleased with this and would quite possibly refuse medical reimbursement in the event of an accident that would have triggered the bags. You may wish to check with them as the premiums for your vehicle are based on loss history *with* operational airbags.

I think the OP may have problem insuring or registering the car due to the problem with the SRS system. It's possible to simply disable the SRS system and drive the car. But, the DMV and or the insurance company may deem the car not roadworthy.

It would best to file a claim with the insurance provider or discuss the situation with the DMV and let them determine if the car is still insurable and can be registered without the SRS system.

Nobody needs to know that the airbag is disconnected, plus in that event, he can extend the liability to Mercedes Benz LLC.

.
That's correct, Airbag is now a part of NHSTA inspection, therefore, many inspection based states are now inspecting it...

So I'm dead either way. Literally.

Yesterday, I bought a 1991 R129 Driver and Passenger airbag, plus control module, on ebay, for $135. I figured I would replace the blown passenger side, leave it disconnected, wipe down the dash, and go on down the road.

Now, it sounds like I have to have a certified mechanic connect it all back up again and take the chance that the bag will kill me before a wreck does.

This is getting worse every day. I cant believe my insurance would be any higher than I pay on all my other classic cars without SRS. The DMV is another story. In Texas, any vehicle over 25 years old is exempt from the detailed inspections. Maybe I could re-title my 500SL as a kit car?

I love government regulations.
