I had the same issue in a Porsche 944 - I believe it is the check valve in the tank - it should let air in when the gas is being used (when running) to displace the volume of used gas with air. If the check valve is stuck, then you are drawing a vacuum.

thanks on the help guys. how do i go about checking it and is it hard to do? i also hear pressure when i open the gas cap sometimes.
also is there a diy somewhere?

The valve is located under the car, over the diff.
Very hard to see.
This is a combination valve, it is set for pressure and also vacuum.
If this valve goes bad, some people had to replace the gas tank.
As the vacuum collapses the gas tank.

never underestimate the force of air pressure...
If you post to ask "is the car worth the repair?", get rid of your 129/140 and go buy a 2013 Corolla... Classic Benz is not an investment for you...
