Any tricks to replacing 91 SL500 antenna?

I'm a new Benz guy.

My antenna was recently shortened by a car wash. Prior to going in, it stopped working (retracting). I took a chance and lost. Afterwards, I noticed why it wasn't retracting and remedied that.

I've purchased the replacement (at a whopping $140...even the Benz parts guy asked if I still wanted it after mentioning the price) and am wondering what the sequence is to replace it. There is a toothed strip of plastic located inside the antenna attached to the tip and extending about 18" out of the base. I'm wondering how it will know where the start and stop points are. I'm not ready to do this wrong and end up at that parts counter again.

Any help out there?

If he went to the dealer ship he only got a new mast from Hirschman (for $140.00 you don't get the whole unit, that's why the clerk asked).
So turn your radio on, take the old mast or whatever is left from it out, and feed the new one in by shutting your radio off .Takes only a minute.

you do need to loosen the nut 1st or it won't spool out.

Which nut are you referring to? Is it the chrome one that holds the antenna down?

I actually had to replace my antenna mast due to the same problem, except the car was literally bent mine in half after realizing the power button on my new head unit wouldn't retract the antenna.

Simply turn on your radio so your antenna is extended fully, loosen the chrome colored nut at the base of the antenna mast and pull the antenna out (it may require some force, but you won't harm anything), also take note at the direction of the grooved teeth when you pull it out, mine faced the back of the car. Once that is said and done take out your new antenna and put the white-grooved plastic strip in your antenna slot in the same direction it was originally (if you don't remember you can still figure it out, it will take awhile to get the right direction..) push the grooved wire down as far as you can with a little extra push as the end when it stops moving, the wire should be able to support the antenna from this point without falling out...for the next part i recommend a towel or shirt around the base of the antenna to prevent paint damage to your car when the antenna retracts...then simply turn off your radio, and it should pull the antenna in! Your going to want to try and guide it into the slot once you turn your radio off, then simply fasten the chrome screw and your set

The one listed here is 1993 and newer. I've been searching for the 1990-1992 but don't even know if it is black or chrome as my car never had it to begin with so I don't even know what I'm looking for.

Any help with my p/n is enormously appreciated!!
