Question 1992 300SL wiper and door lock problem

I have owned my car now for a couple of years and it electrically seems to have a mind of its own! The latest issues are that when the wiper is on pulse it starts and stops wherever and whenever it wants...it runs OK when it's not on pulse but when you turn it off it stops right away and won't go to the bottom of the windshield. The other problem is that the key fob stopped working completely for both doors and the trunk and when using the key you have to lock and unlock each door or the trunk independantly, they won't work in conjunction with each other anymore. I've checked all fuses and batteries and they are fine. I'm not too sure if both problems started at exactly the same time...or if it might matter... but it was within a short time frame for sure. Any ideas?

Wiper fixed! Central Locking?

Thanks for your reply! My husband and I live in BC Canada and purchased our 1992 300SL two years ago and had it shipped from Japan. He's good with cars and troubleshooting, I'll be dealing with the computer stuff!

Since sending my first thread I have had a chance to discover so much more about Benzworld and have spent a few hours navigating the site. It'S GREAT!

WIPER IS NOW FIXED! Went into the relay box and filed and cleaned the contacts!

Downloaded the manual and tried re-syncing the key fob for the central locking system but haven't had any luck. When you press the button on the fob the green and red lights work on the door handles but nothing locks or unlocks. There is a clicking noise when you press the fob button coming from a box on the right inside of the trunk where the vacuum hoses connect. Any ideas what might be going on? Any suggestions would be appreciated!

Me too. No Vacuum, Intermittent Wipers misbehaving

Hmmm, me too....

1992 R129 US 500SL w/ Bergwerks 1st Start Module.

My wipers have started misbehaving in intermittant also. They stop in random places. I'll be cleaning the relay tomorrow!

However the whole central locking / vacuum has also gone kaput. There is no air hissing anywhere.

When I click the IR Fob, I hear one click in the trunk from the vacuum control device, but no pumping effort that I used to hear. When clickign to Red, the red flashes much faster than before obviously indictating a problem - and the fact that nothing is locking. I've tried recynching the key, no change. Does anyone have any ideas on what to try next, otherwise my only option is a remanufacturerd new vacuum pump, about $350. That replacment of cours emay not even work if it's somethign else.

I do find it suspicious that both the wiper issue and the locking happened almost at the same time (at a very wet time of year) as with the above poster. I've searched the forums all evening but found no clues.

Before even thinking of replacing the vacuum pump connect a meter to the wires leading to it and see if you get voltage when activating via infrared key or door lock. Again, the clicking noises point to a relay whose contacts might need cleaning.

Thx, I'll meter it today. However there is at least some energy getting to it as the clicking is inside the vacuum pump, i had it off it's mount but still wired to check last night :-(

Add me to the list guys, have the same problems.
Was raining heavy the wiper was acting up.
Then the locks went south.

I took the vacuum pump out and opened it, it had water in, cleaned it, I also drilled water drain holes in the bottom of the pump to prevent future problems.

Then I noticed that I had water damage on the print board, took out my telescope/ microscope, Haha.

Re solder and by pass the brakes and shorts.
Then more problems the drivers door latch would not lock.

Removed door panel, infra red controls, latch, etc.
The latch something broke inside, no room to see, anyways I fixed it.
Put in a metal screw to hold down the lever/repaired the latch.

Now I can lock/unlock.
The system works on vacuum and pressure to drive the actuators and the A/C.

Everything good,,,, as long as the engine is off.
But when the engine is on or key on position two the vacuum pump is going crazy.

NO VACUUM/ PRESSURE ON THE GAUGE, like you guys.
It goes back and forth.

Something in the ignition is sending double signals.
Wtf, any body has a solution to this mess..........

I am going to be working on that when I have some time.
And YES I did get a new battery. Grrrrr.

Disconnect the vacuum pump guys it is going to cost you. $$$

Regards.

Vacuum diagnosed.... Power getting to the pump, click click in there when i use the remote. I opened up the pump chassis to find a lovely smell of burnt motor :-/ No water or other semi-obvious failure. Has anyone ever replaced the vacuum pump motor itself (not the whole black box)?

I never did get to the bottom of the wipers, whats the best way to open up the relay to inspect?

I got it working, what a pain in you know what.
I just disconnected the bk,gray color wires on pin #1 on the vacuum pump.
Now I can lock/unlock, but no working remote or alarm.

It has never worked sins I bought the car anyways.
I may have to continue working on the remote thing.
Or maybe I shouldn't push my luck.
The wires are coming from the N54 module.
And the N26 not far behind. $$$$$

You may try to solder and bypass the print board in the pump like I did.
Run ohm between the solder points.
Put 12 V direct on the motor see what happen.
They don't die that easy, you never know you may be lucky.

The stealers have sophisticated test equipment that we don't.

Regards.
