An air filter is not going to turn a "slow" car into a faster one, or make miraculous improvements to the performance. If you are game, a different engine, turbo, or supercharger would do the trick, but an air filter will get you zero. Just keep your engine maintained, and a good stock filter will do the trick.
More in more out. More compression more power. just keep up to date w your tuneups and oilchanges as the aftermarket filters will filter less particles
I have a 92 300sl,signal red like yours. After I got the car two years ago I did all the filters, fluids, etc. I put in a K&N both for the performance hype and the ;longevity. I clean it every 6 months. Has it helped performance? I doubt it. The best change I have seen is when I recently put in new spark plugs. The car feels a bit better, but it is no V8.
I just insatlled K&N drop in air filters and boy was it a hassle. Just prying off the engine cover, air filter cover and then unscrewing the torx (sp?) screws was a lotta work. As far as performance goes.... NO INCREASE. Keep the engine tuned, oil clean and just keep your money.

If you want to improve your performance when was the last time that you replaced the following parts?
Spark Plug Wire Set
Bosch F8DC4 Spark Plugs
Ant-Sieze and Dielectric grease for the plugs
Bosch Rotor Cap plus Seal p/n 03366 and 0149975848
Bosch Rotor p/n 04297
Bosch Fuel Filter p/n 71047
Std. Engine Air Filter Note: no need for K&N
Std. Cabin Air Filter while your at it p/n 1298350047
Well I was always dogging K&N filters, then I found out that my car had them
already in.
Oh yes, they where swimming in oil, had to blow some of it off, and clean the air box
out.
