K&N's are not going to make your car into a dragster. My wife's 525i BMW got an easy 1.5 - 2 mpg inprovement average. Does it perform better?? Who knows, it's only 2.5 liters!
My SL has them. I can't tell on the SL, because my gas mileage sucks. Maybe with the K&N's it "sucks less". I don't know.
The key here is that they are cleanable and reuseable. Keeping clean OEM filters in your car can get pricy. K&N's are a little steep at first, but then pay for themselves quickly.
As amm pointed out, you need to pay attention to your servicing of the filters. Properly cleaning and oiling the K&N's is important. Many people use too much oil on them after cleaning. A VERY light mist is all you need. If you follow the product directions, you will end up with too much oil and a puddle in your air cleaner box!

When you turn your car on, does it return the favor?
Well guys here is the scoop.
They are about $100 for a pair of K&N.
The others are about $25
Calculate that you will replace them every 20K miles.
So you are paying K&N in advance assuming that you will keep the car for an other 100K miles to brake even.
Do not forget that the K&N lube kit is not cheap, it is about $15 a pop.
Do you really want to clean dirty oil air filters and air box?
thanks for the responses guys, I have decided to skip the k and n filter and just change what ever i have forgotten to change and after thinking about it the only thing that I can think of is the cabin filter. Thanks Lynn for giving me a list of what needs to be done I have changed all those things but the only thing that I havent changed is the cabin filter dunno if it will increase performance but it definately needs changing anyway. So again thank all of you guys for your responses!!!

Also remember that if you forget to replace the cabin filter that their is a possibility
that as air resistance builds up, you will blow the blower motor or and regulator. $$$$

aam.
aam,
I replaced my climate control unit today and besides now everything is working such as all fan speeds and I notice that the air does not come on anymore when I start the car as it did in the past. Same as yours does now only when you want it to. My question to you, my center vent never worked and I do remember when I got the car, months later I notice that I had no cabin filter. Could like as you mention, my blower motor or regulator for the center vent that if it is a seperate motor, could it now or always had been blowed or regulator because of no cabin filter.

The cabin filter in any car needs regular tending. Ours is big, under the hood, and liable to get detritus from the intake area down in it, so it needs a regular check. It takes no time to check, so I do it every 5k miles. I'll probably replace it every 10k just to make sure the blower fans don't get overtaxed.
One added benefit is how much colder the air coming out the vents is.
