Hi guys that part is just a few bucks at the dealership and it's also pretty easy to replace. There was a thread on the matter lately and a few more in the past so no worries there: it's a common fault and that piece breaks pretty easily with time. And there's no need to buy the whole armrest.
I just want to make sure 'cause mine is broken too. This part is the part in front that when you press you can move the armrest back and forth, and it is not the button on the side (driver side) that opens up the center console, correct?
Does anyone has a picture of this part? I don't want to order the wrong part. Thanks much in advance.
Picture of the missing part and picture of the replacement part are attached. As posted by johnvinh the p/n is 129-683-01-55. At Lone Star in Calgary it was $ 26.64 CDN + tax.
If at all interested I wrote up a DIY blurb on the replacement. If you want it PM me your email as I don't know how to shrink it down to attach on here so need to email it.
well im leaving the beautiful Sicilian Island so talk to you guys soon.... I cant believe im slowly becoming a Mercedes Aficionado. And maybe even an R129 addict. I cant believe I never gave these cars a listen ever. And mine has 140k on the odometer... Still hate this smart car...
I thought they were all black too. Here's some pics of the packaging for mine and I don't see any reference to a color.
One thing of note is that these are refered to as a "Push Buttom" and not a "Push Button", no idea the rationale for the misprint but it gets carried through to the parts manuals as well.
lol. This is funny. I just broke mine a few weeks ago. The temperature here in Vancouver, BC has been ridiculous and has taken a toll on a couple of plastic pieces in my car.
I don't even use the sliding armrest - but the missing button was annoying to 'not see'. Think I have slid the armrest out once since the repair, and that was simply to see if it still worked.
Picked up one for $16.79 + tax at the dealer along with a set of floor mats. I have also just recently replaced the AC filter, oil, wiper blade, air filter, tires, brake pads ... now the car is in "good standing" again. Not a bad car for daily commute! Thanks again guys.
Can you please send me your video on how to replace this button. I have a 1998 SL500 and the button is missing. Planning to buy one, black and replace. Thanks much. baerbob@comcast.net

There is no video on the subject, but a pictorial that is linked in post #22 in this thread. If you want to do a video when you change yours and post it here, it would be a great addition.
Easiest part I've replaced on my car in 3 years of ownership.
Just pops in. But, since yours is missing altogether, might take you a minute since you have nothing to go buy.
One of my tabs was broken off.
Also, they're cheap at the dealer. My receipt says $7.70. And confirms the p/n.
Good luck!
Could someone share the proper function of the gas shock in the center console? Should it spring open with the push of the button as well as dampen the closure when you push it back closed? Mine doesn't seem to be doing much.
The dealer just quoted $92 coming from Germany and even eBay seems about the same - only from Germany. Is there an alternate substitute part sold in the US?
BTW I also quote the armrest slider button as that's broken as well - $32 at the dealer.
I have replaced the piston twice on mine. First with a brand new eBay Mercedes one and then a brand new stabilis one. Neither lifts the console lid without assistance!! I will not be replacing it a third time.
