Post SL600 engine rebuilder

I came across this site from a Craigslist ad...

Mercedes Rebuilt Engines

They appear to rebuild the M120 engine.

And this is the craigslist ad:

Quote:
Finally a solution to the short commings of the problematic Mercedes v12, series M120.xxx found in all 1993 to 1999 SL600, S600 and CL600. And or damaged engines from the Bio-degradable wiring looms that completely disintergrate, become very brittle, break apart, short out and destroy the motors on 93 to 98 SL600 S600 and CL600 V12 engines. (Note: Complete wiring loom and harnesses must be replaced and two new throttle bodies for engine warranty) We magnaflux then remanufacture these engines with new updated parts to eliminate the notorious oil leak and expensive valve train issues. Timing chains and associated overhead quad cams and valves are the weakest points. Ticking, rough idle or excessive oil comsumption are sure tell tail signs that your motor is ready to self destruct at anytime. We have a very limited number of these engines available as a very high number of Aluminum alloy cores do not pass critical tolerences and various inspections. Mercedes Benz no longer supports major overhauls in the M120 series and no longer supplies complete M120 series short or long blocks. We have a very limited supply of these engines ready to ship for $14,500 plus a $3,000 core charge that is refunded if your engine passes our inspections. At Metric Motors, Inc. we know that there are no shortcuts to achieving excellence in the remanufacturing of an engine built to the standards of Mercedes-Benz. We combine Mercedes OEM parts with our stringent factory specifications to satisfy the expectations of the Mercedes-Benz enthusiast. Each engine is meticulously machined and assembled, devoting attention to every detail. With over 27 years of experience, we have continually increased our knowledge, our efficiency and our performance. We go beyond the basics when we build our engines to assure you're getting the best engines available. Since 1979 Metric Motors has done only one thing, remanufacture Mercedes-Benz engines. Our continued long term success and stellar reputation throughout the industry has been due to several factors, highest on that list is our commitment to supply the best mercedes engines available. It's actually a basic principle. We call it our version of...

(multiplied) by over 22 years of specialization in only Mercedes-Benz engines

= Remanufactured Mercedes Engines of the Highest Quality.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

We are a small family owned company of 6 employees. Our shop is located in California's San Fernando Valley in a 6,000 sq. ft. building purchased in 1987. All of our machining equipment is state of the art, enabling us to finish machine our engines to the exact specifications we require. Additionally, we stock a vast selection of engine cores and internal engine parts which we import direct from Germany. Our founder Erich Oeffinger began technical training with Mercedes-Benz in 1947 in Mannheim Germany, specializing in engine machining. Mercedes-Benz transferred him to the factory store in Hollywood, Ca in 1960 with an emphasis on helping diagnose engine malfunctions. In 1980, shortly after committing full time to his engine business, Erich was joined by his son-in-law Mike Elias who's business experience was a perfect match to Erich's technical expertise. Erich retired in 1990 and remains as a consultant.

Fell free to visit the facilities and see our process.

Thank you - Metric Motors, Inc.

Mike Elias - President
Not that I am in need of such a service, but does it look good?

It sounds a little bit like scare tactics to me. The M120 (if treated well) is usually a solid performer without any major flaws and I know of several examples with far over 200K miles and they are still running strong. The cable issue is (of course) another story, but I've never heard of any mechanically "destroyed" V12 engines due to an electric problem. New factory engines are still available from MB, at least here in Europe.

$14.5K + $3K core for a rebuild V12 engine, and the way they put it is most V12 cores are not suitable for rebuild (and they will decide if it is good or not after you ship it back). That means you are looking at $17.5K + shipping + labor.
You can get a decent running and newer R129 SL500 for the same price now a days.

Man you just read my mind. Why should I spend that kind of money for an engine if I can get the whole car?
At that price you could even get a spare 600.

Cheers.

For 14.5K I would really like to see a list of the NEW parts used!!!! NOT RECONDITIONED Parts,NEW MB Quality parts. Who knows the level of the quality they provide??? I also don't need them, But thought the 120's ran FOREVER!!!!! Just a reality check, You can buy a brand new 430HP Small Block chevy with a 3yr-36K warrantee for under 5K!!!!!! Right from GM!!! I know the 120 is a lot more Technical, BUT not 3 times more!!!!

An M120 is $50K new over the counter. Probably doesn't come with a warrantee unless you have it installed for another $10K at the dealer. I do believe that comes with all accessories, fan and wire harness.

So you want a 600. Hahaha.
I have said it many times, I don't.
It is nice when they work..........
I better keep my mouth shut, what if a 500 brakes down.

Hmmmmm.
If I sell the parts, then I can buy an other one.

Regards.

There is no doubt. It is either for the wealthy or the person who can do everything himself. But if you can do everything yourself its not really bad.
