What is the best year for the 500 SL?

I am looking to buy a 500 SL and what is the best years to buy and what are the years to avoid. I am looking to spend around $7K-$10K.

I have a 1972 350 SL and I know parts are expensive and labor by a MB dealer or Indy is not cheap.

If you search and read back through previous threads this debate has cropped up so many times before.

My own personal recommendation would be a 1997 or 1998 SL 500 as that was when the car really came together by Mercedes-Benz and just before the Chrysler merger.

I'm not sure what you would get for $7K - $10K though.

The best bang for buck is a '97- '98 with xenon's, sport package, and heated seats.
with good miles you'll be looking at $12k to $15k, if not more.

If you do find one for $7k to $10k, you will quickly get to the above prices by correcting the neglected, differed maintenance.

+1

M119 is a great engine. 1998 is personally my favorite year.
