I've done some searching and noticed that many of us have this problem with the SRS light going on.
I have a 92 500SL...Well, I read the manual and understand that it's something due to the airbag...but most of the other threads say that either it stays on, or it stays on for 5mins, and then turns off.
Well, mine would come on for maybe 30 seconds, and then goes off for a while...and then go again and off again....and then sometimes, it would just stay on...
I'm not too familiar with cars, and i dont know how to pull the codes...any comments from you gurus? Please help.
lastly, if i drive without fixing this problem, is it hazardous to the vehicle itself? (other than the fact that the airbag may not deploy?)

I had a problem with my 1991 500SL where the SRS light came on for a short while after turning a corner and then went out again.
It turned out to be grease on the brass contact ring on the back of the steering wheel. An easy fix and no problems since. The grease had come from the spring loaded contacts in the top of the column.
If the SRS light stays on, assume that the system will not work correctly!
To remove the steering wheel, the airbag system will have to be disabled (battery disconnected and vehicle left for 10 minutes at least) before you attempt to remove the air bag module from the steering wheel (2 x torx screws accessed from rear of wheel). Carefully disconnecting the wiring plugs and remove the airbag. Make sure you place it face upwards in a safe place. You can then undo the (TIGHT) internal hex headed bolt after centering your steering wheel. I had to use an impact gun for this as it wouldn't shift with my longest breaker bar!. Don't rely on the steering column lock to hold the wheel as it will probably break! Once this bolt is removed, you can gently pull the wheel from the splined shaft. I marked the position with a scribe so it would go back in exactly the same place. After a quick clean up you can reassemble using a thread locking compound on the securing bolt.
