Have got answer from 5 of company’s, 3 of them did not won’t to touch a car like this, it would be too advanced. From the two other ones the answer was that it can be done but it is going to cost. They estimated the price for the tuning to be about 40 000 – 50 000 dollars. That it a lot of money to put into this car.

Don’t anyone know of another supercharged SL600 besides the one typhoontaz have? It would be very nice to at least get some pointers what parts to use. Like the fuel injection part, I really don’t have a clue what we have to do there. So it would be very nice if someone know someone that have a supercharged SL600 or maybe a SL500 that I can get in contact with them and listen to there experiences.
It wouldn't be that difficult to get some nice numbers out of this engine without supercharging. It has a large displacement and is strong and well-built.

By the time you change the exhaust setup, airboxes, and tuning you're already at around 440hp. If you want to do headers and such (costs $$$, but still less than supercharging) you will pick up more.

I am not at all convinced that putting a blower on it is the best way to go with this engine...

Yes I totally agree with you that it’s possible to get some more power out of it by doing some small tweaks. I have built an exhaust for my car with no cats, no resonator boxes and a MZ dezent back boks. This was ok, but I will estimate the power gain to be about maybe 20-25 hp. So can I tune the ECU on a non turbo engine the power gain will be about 3-5%. That would be about 15 hp, no the total is 40 hp. So can we do the intakes, Renntech has some intakes that cost 2000$ and will give 20 more hp. Then we are up to 60 hp and the cost will then be around 4-5 000$. So then the car will be 450 hp. This is ok but I am looking for the little extra, and are hoping on about 600 hp, so the only real option is to supercharge or bore out the engine. Some company’s like Brabusen, Renntech and some others did bore out the engines but this was also a costly affair with prices from 30 000$ and up.

This engine responds abnormally well to the leaning out of the factory a/f maps. Your gain will be more like 10%. Another member, StuartKnight, bought a generic ebay chip and picked up more than double the 15hp you are estimating for that mod. Smell your exhaust and it will tell you how much power the stock tune left on the table.

Just the exhaust, airboxes, and a professional tune should place you at around 440hp+. Headers and such would add to that nicely.

I don't think it's at all impossible to get 500hp out of the M120 without going to f/i, if you are already willing to spend the type of money you would need to put a blower on it.

If your willing to dump about 8-10 thousand, I would suggest keeping it natural (and save yourself from a big headache).

I'd go with: Full Exhaust, Custom Headers, Ported/Polished Heads, Larger Air boxes, Larger Throttle Bodies, and Definitely have it Dyno tuned.
I'm sure Chris could probably add something I've missed in this list ^

I believe these upgrades will put you in the 480-490HP range, and definitely save you a lot of heartache in the software department. Not to mention you'll probably maintain her everyday drivability.

10% increase of performance on a non turbo car?? Hmm, that is not so simple to get that. I have a friend ho chipped his 347 hp AMG and he gained 13 hp, witch is I little bit under 4%. All the other cars I have heard about that have chipped tuned and get the car on the dyno then they will have gained a 3-6%. A lot of manufactures promise a lot more, I have seen ECU chips for the SL600 that promises 450hp, had a dyno diagram about it and all. But I will not believe it before I have seen a dyno done by someone other company’s with no link to the man who manufactures and sells the chip.

A good exhaust upgrade can give you more than I chip.

In my Mercedes ML270 CDI witch is a turbocar they promised me a increase of power from 163 hp to 215 hp. When I run it on another ones dyno some weeks later it only pushed out 195 hp. And that is on a turbo car. So the tuning company’s always say more hp then you get.

The friend who are going to help me supercharge he makes his living doing chip upgrades and miner engines upgrades. He says it’s possible to get 3-6% gain on a non turbo car. 8% can be possible on some car but its unusual. And he does this for a living and chip tune 100-200 cars a year.

I have now talked to many people on the internet and a lot of serious tuners on telephone and have got some starting tips. I will start on this project in august/ September, it will be a blower and the cost for all this will be about 30 000-38 000$ but then it is going to be a fast car.

Comparing diesels to gas is apples and oranges.

And as to the gain from tuning, talk to StuartKnight. He showed around a 30-35hp increase on a dyno from a generic ebay tune. I'm not making it up, and he has posted his dyno sheets.

Yes of course you cant compare diesel and petrol, this is also a turbo car so you cant compare it anyway. The point was that the tuners always say they will give you more HP then they do.

StuartKnight: What dealer did you get it from? I have found very few chips to this car on the internett.

But the discussion in this tread is not about what you can get with chipping, I am of course going to chip my car after the supercharger is installed, this have to be done to get the air fuel mixture right. I am going to have at least 600 hp in my car so its not a possibility just to chip, exhaust and other little tweaks. I am going to do these tweaks as well but do you want a really good power increase you have to have the some kind of supercharging or as I said bore it out to a 7,3 liter.

Starting to get expensive...

$30 000-38 000, sell the car, add that value and buy something like a SL 65 AMG, with the dollar so low you could almost buy a few of them from US, especially since you are Norwegian

Honestly GUSMB has a point there: in Italy you can get a good 2003/2004 CL55 (500 BHPs and a ton of toys in it) for that sorf of money and I bet you can even get a R129 SL73 for the US for that amount of bucks.
I say that not to disrespect your project but economically speaking it's starting to look a little too expensive and full of troubles.
I see a stte route in fronto of yout to be honest and even if 600HPs doesn't seem very far starting from the 6.0L V12 the cost per HP seems exorbitant in my opinion.
But if you still decide to go that way I'm wishing here the best of luck and respect.

Cheers.

Ya, supercharging will be ridiculously expensive.

That's why I think he should leave it n/a. He will be able to make around 480hp - 500hp without supercharging. That is already as much hp as an E55, and without a blower.

Go with a tune, new airboxes, delete cats, change the muffler to a high-flow, and if you want to spend even half of what you would on supercharging, then think about headers and new TBs. Although I can't tell you what to expect from a TB swap, since nobody (including myself) knows what size the M120's TB's are stock, lol. Not many people mod this car. If they are already 80mm like on the later V12s, then you're out of luck on that mod, not much room for improvement.

In any event, if you can get around 500hp without supercharging, I wouldn't mess with it.
