I have a 1996 SL600 that I recently purchased and everything with the vehicle appears fine except for one thing. I cannot get the car to pass emissions because I can't seem to find the correct drive cycle required to get the remaining tests completed. The check engine light (MIL) is not coming on, I had it at the Benz dealer a week ago and had an O2 sensor replaced and have driven about 400 miles since both city and highway. There are no codes being issued and from all appearences everything seems correct. The dealer just said I need to drive the car until it finishes its diagnostics but I'm starting to wonder about that.
I only have about another 3 weeks to get the vehcle registered in Georgia before I become illegal and can't drive it anymore without taking a chance. But, at this rate, I may not have any choice.
Has anyone experienced this type of problem and is there a vehicle/mercedes specific drive cycle that must be followed?
it just took me 3 months t get mine t pass.. to start, because its a 96 mb used a lot of stuff from 95 to put the car together.. the cars run beautiful but the two computers cannot communicate properly so they don't know what's going on.. the emissions center will have to do a throttle test where they test for hc and co at idle and at driving rpms.....good luck....................... ................................
luckily I bought mine from a dealership and they had to fix it to pass emissions to get it registered. what they replaced was: both maf's, timing gear, timing chain, syncronized the throttle bodies, a couple of vacuum hoses, two O2 sensors. plus I had a C service performed on the car.. and it just barely passed......
Hopefully your car is mechanically sounds and serviced regularly because if you don't keep up with them more things go bad and snowball.. good luck and if u have any ?s about emissions feel free to pm me..

Ya, I agree with you. 600s are a biznatch to get running clean. It's never going to pass emissions test with flying colors. Heck, they BARELY passed when brand-new, so now that the cats are 10+ years old you can be certain the situation hasn't gotten any better with age.
Mine always smells rich at idle, etc. Luckily I live in FL, where we don't have to pass emissions. I am still going to clean out the MAFs soon and will have the dealer replace all my pre-cat O2 sensors next time I'm in. That should solve my problems. Probably still wouldn't pass emissions if I lived in a state that required an inspection, though.
Two independent MAF's, two independent throttle-bodies, etc. etc. is just a lot to keep in sync.
