Hi everyone,
Recently I had my 1992 500 SL placed on a scope at the dealership as it was hestitaing at takeoff. They came up with coil problem on left side and wanted $700 to replace. Is this a difficult thing to do, any special tools needed. I have done recent repairs before on this car, Can anyone help or give me some useful tips. Thanks in advance.

No special tools needed.
Just a socket set.
If you are not making a mistake and we are talking about the same thing .
It is very easy to replace, 15 minutes job.
The coil is located behind the left headlight two screws and a few nuts on the wires, and is out.
The stealer wants $700.00 are they hiding something, are they going to do anything ells?
aam,
Here's the actual scope diagnosis report attach to this reply from Mercedes and I believe it's what I said but I could be wrong.

Hi carltwo,
I looked at the scope report.
Looks that the bad coil is the on on the passenger side.
There are two coils on the car both are close together like I said 2" behind the left headlight
and ABS.
Has a plastic cover you will see a wire looks like a spark plug wire going from the coil to the engine/distributor caps, remove the cover it snaps out the coil is under it trace the wire that goes to the passenger side distributor cap thats your bad coil
Look at the coil carefully there two screws and a tower.
Are the screws on the left/or the right of the tower?
Then go to any parts site check for the look, and prices.
They are about $ 65.00 each. Free shipping.
When you are installing the coil.
( Keys off.)
aam.
