Buzzing noise c. 2000 rpm

1999 SL500, 133,500miles.

The car makes a strange buzzing/moaning noise between about 1,700 and 2,000rpm. Sounds like it's coming from under the car. It only happens with the transmission in drive, never in park or neutral; generally only discernible at slow speeds (it may occur at higher speeds in higher gears, but I certainly can't hear it). It seems to be getting worse.

I have thought it may be an exhaust blow or the transmission. The cats are new.

I have checked and it is not the heatshield wrapped around the exhaust.

Any ideas most gratefully appreciated.

Has this car ever had the engine mounts replaced? If so what was the last date and mileage?

You can determine if the engine mounts need replacing by engaging the parking brake fully. Put your foot on the brake pedel, put the car in gear and slowly raise the RPM until you hear the sound. I would suggest that you have someone stand to the side of the engine compartment and look to see if the engine lifts up in the engine bay (kinda like it's coming out of the compartment) as you raise and lower the RPM.

JJ, I had the same sort of noise, did it tickover or flat out, no change in speed of rattle, I did the same as you checked all the exhaust mounts, heat shields etc and found nothing, in desperation I raised and lowerd the roof and it went away, I cannot explain it, the noise sounded as though it was coming from the top of the gearbox, not the rear of the car. Let us know your findings. Also have a read of.....http://www.benzworld.org/forums/r129...hlight=buzzing

Thanks for the inputs.

Lynns: the car has never had the engine mounts changed (now showing 133,500miles), the dealer has always insisted it is not yet necessary. I will flag this up to them now, because the car is in for investigative work as I write this.

Wayneg: I cycle the top quite often (it is summer here in the UK, although you'd hardly believe it) and, by coincidence, I refitted the hardtop yesterday (I had to go to a funeral and thought it unseemly to go in a softtop car) but if anything the noise is even worse.

I have pressed on the dealer my desire that he fix the problem as I am taking the car to Brooklands and back on Sunday (600miles round trip) and then to Normandy in France the following weekend (1,300miles round trip) and so can't risk any major failures; not to mention my summer holiday to Italy is looming in September (4,000miles, the car needs to be perfect).

I will report in full. Thanks again.
