My assumption is that for the newer "never needs changing" tranny, they are using a synthetic ATF, and that is $$$. Using Dexron in a tranny using synthetic is a recipe for disaster IMO.

I think if we ask dealer for ATF and filter and gasket, we have to pay around $400-$500.

But we can purchase filter and gasket by $30 in japan.
I've serched for cheapest factory ATF, cheapest is $20 by quarts and dealer price is around $30-35.

And about ATF change.
My friend has 722.3 tranny mercedes and he saids torque converter in 722.3 tranny has drain prug so he can change whole ATF when he will do the ATF change operation.

I wonder torque conv. in 722.6 has drain prug or not.
Masaki san.

Yes I know some Japanese as I was born in Taiwan (raised in US) and most Taiwanese or Chinese know at least the common Japanese terms as we are 'somewhat' connected in our cultures.

Back to the topic...

As for $400-$500 usd. for a transmission service that would be hella expensive here in the US.

Also It is highly recommended to only replace the amount of fluid in the pan only!!!
Do not replace or flush all of the ATF in the system as there is a possibilty to damage your transmission's internal components!!!

Very important!!!

I sincerely apologize for the confusion as this was a matter of communication error somewhere between me and the parts manager. Yes genuine MB does run $15 but for Dexron-Mecron III they do not carry or sell MB brand. I know its Kinda strange...and I am unsure of the reasons and again I do apologize to everyone for the confusion.

So I called our other local deealer Mercedes-Benz of Cary, NC for further investigation and was told the same thing.
Here is their phone number: 919-380-1800
Well It looks like Dexron-Mercon lll is acceptable in the older tranny's. The new seven speed are using synthetic fluid. It seems like the MB price is the same for the old and the new. So I guess if you are going to flush and want to use synthetic you use the new fluid. The new fluid is $14/15 per QT.

Dear benge,NEOKEN,Myndex.
Thank you for your message.

I'd serched to purchase oil, gasket, filter for 722.6tranny in japan.
Cheapest shop in japan sells factory oil 8qt,gasket,filter for $130.
I think it is not bad price, so I will get it.

I broused 722.6tranny oil things in japan and knew that change "only" 3L of drained ATF and filter from pan is best as NEOKEN told me.

I think above work is only 1h.
I will do on next weekend!

But I have to buy Hex wrenches for drain bolt and A/T pan....

You should be able to find the Torque Converter bolt and remove an additional 4.5 Liters unlike the newer MY00-02 that did not have a TC bolt. So if you follow these directions at 722.6 Transmission Fluid and Filter Change you should use about 8 Liters. Do not overfill!
In addition, I have learned a few extra things to take care of while you are changing the oil. For p/n's etc. please read Change Trans Fluid and Filter ????

Wait Masaki San: If you have a 1992 500SL (as your new profile says) then it should not have a 722.6 transmission as that did not come out till 1996. I alway thought you have a 1996 SL320 as stated in your earlier post.
