Check Engine Light

Hi all, The Check Engine Light came on today and keeps coming on whenever I start the car. Checked gas cap to ensure it was on tight and it runs fine so it's definitely not in "limp home mode". Bringing it in to MB Friday to get a diagnostic done. Wondering what this might be or if their are any simple things I could check. Thanks!

You have a 98 so it is not likey a wiring harness problem. I have had my harness replaced, replaced the catalytic converter, two o2 sensors, and a relay. Thats over $5k in repairs in the last 14 months.

Now you know why it is called the checkbook engine light.

It could have been the gas cap. It takes a while for the light to go out afterwards. Had the light coming on, opened and closed the gas cap, drove another 500 miles until the CEL went off. You just have to be patient. It'll go out eventually. I wouldn't waste money at MB if you don't see anything wrong (driving, idle speed, etc.) with the car except the light.

check eng. light

Here is an update. Checked gas cap early on no change. Took a chance last nite and topped off gas, check engine light still on last nite. Today just started car and check eng. lite DID NOT stay on! Turned car on/off several times and chk eng lite not staying on, so it appears to be back to normal.

Does this mean it was possibly the gas cap, although it was tight?
Does it mean all is OK now?

Curious as to what you think and thanks for the advice as I did check the gas cap, that one plug, and any of the hoses you all mentioned.

<y mechanic says if it comes on because of the gas cap it stays on for a while until it goes off. He said that's normal and happens with almost all of them.

If you don't feel anything wrong and the light is off then you should be fine. I also have a 97 E420 and it does the exact same thing. The light goes away after 1 day or so.

Id the hose is off you should hear the whistling sound when the engine is running.

Another CEL Problem

Even after service center diagnosed faulty code and apparently fixed the problem, the light is on again after 6 days of being off. The mechanic thought the problem the first time was the possibility that water got into the housing below the auto shifter. I told him none had been spilled. The car was then and is this time in the 'limp home mode.' I've checked the thread suggestions without success. No unusual engine noises exist.

Looking for suggestions.

This has happenned to me several times, and as recently as yesterday. It has ALWAYS been the gas cap. I was low on fuel (1/4) filled up, but more importantly, I paid attention to how the cap was attached when I did not have the CEL come on, as it can be installed two ways. I am sure now to always install the cap the same way each time, to prevent these nuisance false alarms. Whatever works.
