Recently my 90 500SL has started squeeling while it's being driven for the first 3 to 5 kms - until the engine is about 90 deg.
The squeel is quite loud and is comign from the engine area. It doesnt squeel on start-up or when idling - but, only when driving (straight and cornering). It is on through all the gears and close to 60 or 70kph (haven't relaly gone above that to find out - didn't think to).
When I pull back from the trottle it stops, and starts again when I accelerate. It becomes quieter at the gear change and picks up again afterwards.
After the temp hits about 85 to 90 degrees it stop and it's perfectly normal for the journey. It starts again when the engine is quite cold.
The serpentine / poly-V belt was replaced - but the squeeling continues.
I've read through some of the other discussing on the forum about squeeling, but there is nothign conclusive or closely related to this problem.
Would someone be kind enough to shed some light on it before I take it to the STAR shop?
Without seeing it its kinda a crap-shoot,but here goes: have you checked the idler pulley? Did someone use the incorrect accesory drive belt? Also have someome check the battery and the altinator{sp},If the battery is very low in charge, the drive belt COULD slip on the alt.pulley when the car is cold, making the belt squeel!!! As the alt. charges the battery {and the engine warms up} the noise stops because the alt. dosent have to work as hard.Thats the first place that I would look,Keep us informed!!!![:)]
I have a mechanic who is pretty good with MErcs coming into look at it on Monday. See if I can figure it out before then.
The bad thing about serpentine and poly belts - it runs so many pulleys it's hard to isolate the problem. Whats even worse for me is it doesn't happen when the car is idling - only when being driven. Other than having the car elevated while revving, it's hard to find the problem when stationary.
Imagine if the car comes off the jackstands while revving..eeks! It will be like that Ferrari scene from Feris Bewller's Day Off.
