98 sl500 how do I refill hydraulics?

I have leaky front cylinders and would like to try the "stop leak" fluid to remedy the problem, and I removed the trunk liner but found no pump or resivoir. I hate to disassemble the entire automobile and sometimes stupid questions are easier to handle than stupid mistakes. Thanks for your help.

Joe, the pump is in the compartment under the spare tire. Good Luck w/No Leak, I hope it works as discussed in these forums!

The info below is for any of us wanting to have our hydraulic cylinders rebuilt as opposed to buying new. I've personaly had the front's done on my car as have many others in this forum with great success from Dennis. Very professional rebuild, fast service, great pricing and turnaround time.

Mercedes Hydraulic Cylinder Rebuilder

Dennis Ficken
16285 S. Chester
Olathe, Ks 66062
(913) 390-0506
mercedescylinders@sbcglobal.net

1 Cylinders are repaired in 1-2 days after receipt

2 Highly recommend rebuilding in ‘pairs’ where appropriate, i.e., front/rear latches, etc. even if only 1 is leaking presently

3 If any cylinders are leaking in rear of car, check all cylinders carefully. Experience has shown that all original cylinders fail within a short time of each other when the cylinders start leaking in the rear of the car. The seals fail due to age, not mileage or amount of use

4 All work warranted for 3 years from date of return shipment

5 No core charge as customer’s cylinders are repaired and returned

6 Can repair any of the cylinders in the convertible top system on 1989-2002 R129 SL’s and 1989-1996 W124 Cabriolet Mercedes. Roll bar cylinders cannot be repaired

7 Charges: $30@ + $10 total shipping cost. Ex., Repair both front cylinders is
2 x $30 + $10 = $70. Parts can be returned via overnight shipping at customers expense.

Bob

Wrote to Lucas Oil about stop leak as a preventative measure and rec'd this response;

Joe,
Thanks for looking to Lucas for solutions. Your best bet would be Lucas
Hydraulic Oil Booster/Stop Leak and treat the system at 5% of system oil
capacity. This amount should be ample but you could add an additional 5% if
your initial treatment seems to fall short of goal. I wouldn't recommend a
treatment greater than 10%.
Thanks again,
John Mingus

here is the link; Lucas Oil

curious as to what everyone thinks. also would like to know what is the capacity of the system

I just sent Lucas an Emal to see what records they might have on this product. I have a small leak in my pass. top front pillar. 99 SL500 sport. I had the same problem with my 95 SL320. Pain in the neck. Great cars, lousy leaks. Will keep all posted on what info I get from Lucas.

This may be a preventative measure.

Hydraulic Oil System Capacity= 1.25 liter = 1.32 qts = 42.3 oz

42.3 oz x 0.0725% = 3 oz. Stop Leak

Bob, I'm sorry to hear of your plight but please know that you are not alone and much has been discussed on this forum about your concern. May I suggest that you start by reading R129 Convertible Top 'Hydraulic Cylinder/System

Because all of your cylinders are leaking you may want to read http://www.benzworld.org/forums/r129...winshield.html and consider trying NO LEAK.
