This is a reply to my original post. You find answers by doing it. Removed the front portion of the console, because you canot get to the ashtray any other way. I discovered that the ashtray would not stay closed because the gear was not attached to the door pivot point on one side. The door and gear are connected by a split pin which drifted lose, pushed it back in and the door works like it should.
