My 500sl seems to squeel for about 20 to 30 seconds on startup when its cold then after that there is a rare quick squeek but once warmed up doesnt squeek for the rest of the day. I took it to the dealer and they say they tightend the tensoner. It did the same thing the next morning so the question is what is it?? Any help would be appreciated.
The most common squeeling sound on startup for any vehicle is a loose or old fanbelt or combination of both. They aren't too expensive to replace on most cars. maybe the merc more so. If tightening didn't work, I would try replacing, unless it is quite new. Hope this helps.
NZSL is right I had the same problem last autumn, with all the electrics in use there is more load on the alternator with the effect that a loose or worn belt squeals, in my case quite loudly. Anyway it was only loose and after adjusting no more squealing.
Don't know how long a tensioner would last. The belt should last years and years and they normally do on even the cheapest of cars. I think problems begin if they are not tensioned right. Then they wear and need replacing sooner, quite possibly within a year.
My car is doing some kind of squeeling at start up also. When i'm looking under the hood I think it's the air injenction pump. After 30 to 40 seconds or so if you look at it the clutch will disengage and it stop just like a/c compressor.
