I have a 1998 SL500. Recently I opened the soft top to see hydraulic fluid leaking from the corners of the top of the windshield. Probably a cracked line. Is there an easy way to fix this or is it a job for an expert.

Thank you. I guess I will not know if it is the latch or the hydraulic until I open the lid. That part sounds easy enough. Do you know if you can buy just the hydraulic part or do you have to buy the latch(s)?
I can look in my EPC, but I´m sure that somebody already know the answer. If you don´t recive any answer in 16 hours, I look into the EPC for you. If I don´t, please remind me in a note to hano@r129.info

Well, the hydralic lines is sold separate and also the locks. For my car (1996) the partnumber (number 5 in picture # 2) for the locks is A1298000774 (LEFT) and A1298000874 (RIGHT). You can see them in picture I attached.
What is it about the MBZ top hydraulics that make them such a frequent leaker? Is it the wrong oil? Wrong seal materials? This is inexcusable. There is no earthly reason why these repeated seal failures should happen. In the 23 years I maintained my Citroen SM I NEVER had to replace a hydraulic seal. I did have to change 2 dust boots on the rear suspension, and the accumulators twice.
I suspect the oil and seals are incompatible. Maybe we should be using Nissan Active Suspension oil ($16/l). Their active suspension cars don't leak either.
I just joined the site and wanted to say thank you for all who provided info on this string. i just spoke with phillip (phillip@mercedesshop.com) and have ordered the cylider to replace. 130 v. 1000 at the dealership!
on a somewhat related note - the plastic windows on the back of the softtop have small runners (cracks). is there any other way to repair other than paying 3,000 for a new top?? thanks in advance!
chad.
If your leak was like mine, it's probably the hydraulic cylinders above the windscreen. I was able to buy 2 replacement cylinders online for about $270.00. It took about an hour to replace them...and I'm a real novice. The dealer wanted $1500 to replace them. Let's see....$270 compared to $1500? That's a no brainer.
