I currently have a 90 300CE. Am thinking of upgrading to a R129. Due to the rediculous tax structure here in Singapore, I am looking at 300SL-24 or the later SL280. Any comments on what I should look out for? Any tips much appreciated.
interiors are the weak point , chances are that if you find one in good shape internally then its a good sign as to how the car has been treated overall.
Like all 104 engined models the cylinder head gasket has a tendency to leak at the rear end. This can go on for a while before its a problem but eventually they all seem to need a head overhall. If you find one thats had it done at a good MB specialist or dealer then that might be a good thing as if done properly they should last better than from new.
Wiring harnesses are reputed to be the other weak spot (biodegradable insulation!!). Not sure how this manifests itself other than some electrics start to fail so test everything.
Soft hood must be inspected and tested to see it goes up and down ok as its expensive to replace or fix the mechanism if it doesnt work.
View as many as you can (at least 6 or more) and you will develop an instinct for whats good and whats not. Reject anything without full service history , they need on time servicing.
SL280 replaced the 300 12v so will be newer. I think the 300 12v was more powerful than the 280 and with a less complex cyl head may be less prone to the head gasket problem.
Avoid the manual SL280 its reported to be hard to resell.
I have a 300 SL-24 and its a glorious, screaming engine. Not at all sterlized like the later versions were - though you might prefer that of course.
As previous says, plastics in interiors are weak (weathering?) and electrics can play up. The humidity is no friend to electrics (I live in Hong Kong). Many a time in summer here (or all year there I suspect) lights will flash on dash and things will sometimes work, sometimes not. Is generally a mis-alarm. Think all cars (except Jap ones) do that - not at all prepared for shere damp.
Cycle & Carriage in Sing seem to be a good place to get trim/MB parts so you have an advantage there.
Overall, if you buy a 300-24 remember that they were only made to 94 and are basically old. You will have top spend money to maintain it. The newer SL320 is same engine to 97 (i think) but bored out with same power lower down rev-range which is nice, however, not as sporty as older 300-24 (in my opinion).
Probably cannot get a manual in Asia so 4-speed auto only for early 300-24's with optional (worthwhile) 5-speed later.
SL500 is better for torque and only has 4-speed until much later... 300SL (12v) and SL280 are boring.
Roof top is complicated and if not working properly (try it several times on different days)probably avoid UNLESS it really is a good car cosmetically and mechanically.Again though, humidity in 'roof computer' (really) can be the cause. Remember that they are good at 'tidying up' old cars in Asia so look beyond the surface.
