Just shy away from '81-82 380SL's, they tend to have a timing chain problem which can be a $4000.00 fix...If you can, try to find a 'Euro' SL (What I have)-Smaller bumpers and get this-A five speed transmission! Unless the car has been converted to U.S. specs, you may have some regi problems. Hell, if you find a nice Euro, drop the $150 and put in a new Catalytic converter, that will get it through smog...Any questions?

Here's a link to a very good Road and Track article talking about the 1972-1989 SLs and their recommendations for purchase and what to look for. I personally own a 1988 560SL and have enjoyed driving it these last ten years that I have owned it. Good luck with your search for finding the right car.
Dont be concerned if you find a good condition car
I'm selling mine on ebay http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=1850602136
because I need to start a business...
I like the car but it cost to maintain a car that is 20 years old
I have other priorities right now
And the timing chain was replaced with doublewide
