Fellas,
I'm looking at an '85 Euro that has an Odometer that's inoperative. Owner says it's been out for a short time. So is the Speedo/Odo setup electronic or is it just as simple as a cable like my old Pontiac!? I'm concerned if it's electronic that there may be more widespread issues behind the dash. ?
Primary feed is electronic for the speedo. It also drives a small electric motor that drives the gears for the odometer. The plastic gears are known to fail and are replaceable.
The odometer failure is really common in these cars. It's also an easy fix, less than $20 and doesn't take long to do. The hardest part is getting the steering wheel off so you can get the instrument cluster out.
Note that, if this is the common failure (grease destroying the odometer gears), the speedometer itself will still work fine, just not the odometer.
You need to give more information on the car .It will help members sort things out much faster Most will be removable with the steering wheel in place All w123 and W124 you can get them out without removing the steering wheel. First job i had to do on mine. Some speedos will come out from the dashboard easy .Some can be a right p-g to remove . I could not remove mine ,,i had to wait till it was hot day to pull it out .Make 2 pullers about 8 inches long with a 1/4 right angle bend on the bottom for a hook .Push them in down the side of the speedo case one left one right turn them and pull it out . Its an easy job if you are careful .One thing is to lift the speed pointer over the end stop and mark its resting place with a marker .If you dont do this the speed will be out on assembly .The next is the snail spring that sits under the pointer note how it comes off ,its held in with a small round pin. My camera was very hand when i did mine .The speedo will just give you enough room to get in and remove the multi conector. This wont go back in the wrong way its like a key hole on the plug.Take pictures of bulb locations all those will have to come out The speedo cable or drive cable will need to be removed from the rear . Fix a duster on the dash so you don damage it pulling out the speedo. Then you should have it on the bench to work on .
What I used to pull the cluster was a couple of paint can openers I got for free at the hardware store. And on a 107 you have to remove the wheel to get the cluster out.
Hey Trevor, Thanks for the detailed description and cautionary procedures! The car is not in my hands as I'm planning on a pre-buy type inspection on it shortly. The owner simply stated the Odo issue to me in advance. I'm going to prioritize VIN and engine serial number check out then wanted a basic idea on this Odometer issue magnitude and other stated issues. If there's some basic additional info on this car required to determine other big issues seen in these cars, I can try to offer up more. Thanks
Well not that gm muscle cars are the focus here but "Isthisdave" was asking.....
Ive been into Pontiac stuff since my first car at 16 was my Grandfather's '69 Firebird hand-me-down in 1986. Ever since I've been a Pontiac nut with a few side trips through the Nissan 300z realm of the 'early '90s. My '69 is all original with minor Mx updates. My current project is a '72 Gto 455ho that lived in Wisconsin in a barn from '83-2011 when I bought it. It's now fully restored mechanically and just in need of frame-on paint/body. It's a beast to drive but engine rebuild was kept to specs with only cam and piston upgrades bringing it to 425hp/500lbs. With factory 3:90 rear, Muncie m22 close ratio transmission and manual steering it's not something you drive but OPERATE. No drinks or cell phone usage while on a cruise! I'll try and post a few pics for Dave when I figure upload process out.
This is why we are ready for an easy cruiser like an SL.
