My car doesn't have one. Looks just like regular old masking tape.
It's probably there to prevent the hard top from rubbing itself onto the chrome thus protecting it. My top has little bits of white on the chrome from the hard top rubbing against it. It comes off without a problem, but it's still a pain that I don't want to deal with.
Remove it if it is bothering you. Shouldn't hurt anything.
Maybe some sort of barrier to vibration of the trim or to stop the strip from moving around and getting pressed onto the metal there causing damage to paint and maybe a rust point?
I've removed it, but wondered if it was original (or perhaps some masking tape put there by someone refitting the windshield in the past). Now I know it's original - but have no idea what it does, though perhaps it removes 'squeeks' as the metal trim on top of it moves? (just a guess?)
